Picked this up today.

Took it for a spin. 6 speed gearbox, seems to go well. Not sure what to make of it really. Might sell it.

What's the crack with the Celeca? Is it a fake sports car, or do people actually consider them sports cars?

Drives quite nice for it's age.

What's it worth realistically? It's got 120k miles on it.

Mate of mine had one about the same time I had my DC2

Took it up Prescott Hill

https://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk301/arryR32/Weekender%202010/IMG_1502.jpg

IMO too difficult to keep up on cam and far too slow off of it. Handling was pretty good though, despite cheap tyres, and ride comfort / equipment wasn't bad at all - especially compared to the Integra

Can't comment on owning a Celica, but if that's the 1zzfe engine that's got the same pistons as the 1.8 in the Corolla and Avensis, then watch the engine oil like a hawk. The pistons apparently didn't have enough oil drain holes put in them, so over time oil clogged up and then got past the piston rings.

https://www.toyotanation.com/forum/131-8th-generation-1998-2002/402362-diy-oil-consumption-fix.html

If the 1.8 Celica used different engine internals then you'll hopefully be ok.

I had one, loved it. Very nice looking car, surprisingly practical (two rear seats, and they fold down for a lot of space), not going to win many races but nice to drive, did a lot of miles in it.

Is that a 51 reg? If it's in good condition, you might be lucky and get £2,000 for it, but it doesn't look like it based on the fact you have the basic spec wheels on suggesting it doesn't have the premium interior either.

The big problem to watch for with the Celicas was the VVTLi engine (different from VVTi) which would 'lift' at high RPMs and give you a VTEC-esque boost. The bolts in the pre-facelift model were dodgy. Something else to watch for is the engine management light. It should come on when you start the car and then go out. If it doesn't even come on, an unscrupulous previous owner may have disconnected it to hide something...

For me it's a fake.

Not quite fast enough, not quite sharp enough handling, kinda looks OK, in an anonymous sort of way.

Typical Jap mass market really, slightly more form than function, but not enough of anything to really get the heart racing.

I've always thought of that model as being for women and poseurs, probably not appealing to anyone who knows anything about cars.

I agree.
I always though they were in the same category as the Hyundai Coupe.

Interesting. Pricing seems to vary so much.
Think I'd be happy with a grand to be honest.

It's got very nice interior. Black leather bucket style seats.

I prefer the Hyundai to look at, it's got some nice styling cues, but the handling is extremely sketchy and the engines are woeful.

I find it incredibly difficult to get excited about almost all Jap cars, there's maybe 2 or 3 that I would vaguely consider owning, unless all I wanted was something guaranteed to start every day and get me to work, with no consideration for driving pleasure.

Fake? Better than an Astra or whatever with 'sport trim'. This and the MX-3 were fun sporty coupes, not race cars.

@Binge: How tired does it feel? I test drove a lot of them and some felt extremely shagged out, so I kept shopping and paid a bit more for one with lower mileage that hadn't been ragged every day.

Check everything's condition: those 15 inch alloys were notorious for corroding if not looked after or curbed too many times, make sure they're all sound including the spare. Look for wear or tears in the driver's side interior carpet which tended to suffer. Take it for a decent spin on a dual carriageway and see how it accelerates to a high RPM.

The leather ups your price a bit, does it have the navigation system or a storage compartment? CD changer and/or optional sub in the back?

always like the look of them tbh..

never bought one as ive been put off by the number of them on ebay with knocking engines, seems to be an issue with the vvt?

my neighbour had a black one for a while, went well for what it was, which is a sporty looking family hatch, with aftermarket rims and polished.. its what got me looking

Unless it's the T Sport version it'll be as slow as shit and even if it is it'll just be as fast as a slightly runnier shit.

Pretty, probably reliable but FWD and uninspiring engine make them a no-no for me.

I think I'd rather have the Astra, they will do 200K+ and I wouldn't have to worry about wonky wheels, buggered engines and threadbare carpets, plus it would be just as fast, handle just as well and I could get two full sized adults in the back, not just a couple of kids or some lower body amputees.

And don't start with the MX3, that's about as fake a sports car as the Japs ever produced, it's right up there with Tesco value baked beans and Bangkok ladyboys.

What HP?

My friend had the 190hp version and I was pleasantly surprised - I was thinking 'fake sports car', but instead found 'responsive hot hatch'. When I had a look at the listed weight, that explained it.
I'm not a massive fan of the look - which to me says 'hair dresser' more than anything, but possibly better than an actual hot hatch.

So, I wouldn't go as far as a sports car necessarily - but 190hp, 1.1t and setup with appropriate sparkle without messing. Current prices are pretty reasonable when compared to similar opposition.

I really like these. Bit girly but I do not mind that.
How ridiculous are the rear seats in real terms?

I pretty much always got to sit in the front that I remember - for a good reason - rather cramped in the back as far as height goes I'm pretty sure (I'm a smidge under 6'). Otherwise, space in the back didn't seem TOO silly.

There's only two of them, and I wouldn't want to be a 6 foot guy sitting in them for a long haul.

I had one just like that for 2 years.

Reasonably practical, the boot was a pain, it's long and wide but because of the shape of the rear boot lid you can't get anything tall in it! not very quick, handles well, and looks better than you average hatchback etc

I sold it for 2 reasons. First one was there was a grating noise coming from the rear brakes, which no matter how many times I took them apart, cleaned them and rebuilt them I couldn't get rid of. Which was a massive pain in the arse.

Second I decided to get a 350z Smile

Celica was alright, but I prefered the Mk2 MR2 I had years before it.

I looked at one when I was last car shopping, but ended up with an Astra instead. Pretty much identical specs (although I'd like a 6th gear) but holds its value better.
And the Celica is just too close to being a hairdressers car for me.

I've got one, a 53 reg but the facelift version.

You will need to watch the oil, the engines do burn oil, which was fixed on the facelift ones supposedly.

I like mine, sound good when you start to hit some high revs and handles quite nicely, you'll soon find where the tyre squeal hits but n the A62 to Oldham I didn't find it to understeer much, if at all.

In short it's a cheap sporty car that isn't a supra or a GT4 or the likes but nice to drive nevertheless. I bought it because I have a bike to go super fast on and the missus is trusted to drive this without plowing it into a wall somewhere.

Probably easier to compile a list of ones I haven't driven.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of Jap cars that do a few things very well, but they often fail in the crucial area of providing driving pleasure, largely due to them engineering out any character.

I find them deeply uninspiring and not the kind of thing that makes me want to go for a drive, just for the sake of it.

I've driven a 140 bhp one.

Thought it was quite quick when on the boil but otherwise pretty slow and bland, hated the gearbox (reverse adjacent to 1), should have been RWD, the interior was tacky although I did still like it, but the main issue was that I didn't fit in it. If the car has leather front seats then the rear seats will be made of vinyl. Not a concern unless you regularly ferry a midget around (the only person who might use the comically small rear seats) because he'll get a sweaty arse and complain non-stop.

I don't mind the look, until some chav tries to modify it, at which point it immediately looks gay. Prefer the look of the older model though.
