PostPosted: 23:39 - 20 Mar 2014    Post subject: Loose exhaust pipe - NOW WITH VIDEO! Reply with quote

Evening guys and gals.

I've noticed that my exhaust can is a little loose. It doesn't seem like the clamp is 100% tight, but I'd have thought tight enough. When I try to wobble the exhaust can, the link pipe doesn't move at all, but the end of the can moves quite a bit. Generally where the end of the carbon meets the beginning of the actual can, where you can see the rubber part. Pretty much anything you can see of the exhaust (in this photo) that is silver doesn't budge an inch. I've attached the below photo to show where I mean.

Now I haven't attempted to tighten any of the bolts yet, simply because it was 9pm by the time I got home and raining. I just wanted to know if the bolts by the arrow are to blame, or whether the construction of the actual exhaust is questionable?

Any tips and help will be generously rewarded Karma

Both things your mentioned, tighten everything and see if it helps

I'm guessing that's a no branded carbon Moto gp jobby? Most of which are good but you might have a poorly made one

If its branded then if you get stuck you could always ring the company ? Generally found exhaust companies help full in sorting issues out, might know an easy fix

Ok I've tried tightening, and that's not doing a thing. Here's a video to show you what is happening. I'm hoping this can be sorted.

Micron on my fireblade does that although not that much, however on mine it's because the threads on one of the bolts don't 'bite' enough. The bolt falls out, I keep meaning to do something about it. Will probably tap it with a larger bolt.

Standard, lots of gaffer.

In real fixes, no idea but its a carbon can on a V twin. I would advise swapping it anyway.

Its a J model ZX6 in the pics.

The only thing you can do, is carefully drill into the carbon sleeve, right near where it pushes onto the loose end cap, but leaving enough 'meat' so the hole doesnt pull through.

Then get some rivets and a gun and fit them.

Make sure to buy the rivets first, then drill the hole and also push the sleeve so its fully on the end cap.

Evoboy - having never used a rivet gun, I feel that may be out of my skill level.

It's not currently blowing, but with the state of the roads around here I'm worried it'll fall off .

A manual one is easy to use.

You can buy them cheaply enough.

Or, you can post it to me and ill sort it for you if your willing to wait a few days? Send me a PM.

The local bike shop don't seem to think there is anything they can do. And have advised i replace it. Still unsure whether to try a cheap fix or just suck it up and order something new. I'm going to be putting a lot of miles on this bike, so maybe a new one is the right choice?

It can be fixed. But it just means it will have rivets in one end and not the other. Eventually, the holes for the rivets will elongate and itll end up doing the same thing again.

Unfortunately, thats just how it is with carbon cans.

The offer is still there if you change your mind Thumbs Up

Thanks, it's definitely something I'll consider.

Are carbon cans generally just a bad idea then?

Oh and does anyone have any recommendations for exhausts to look at, if I were to go new and order one?
