If it isn't giving you any trouble, why change it? Leave it until you have a problem - if you ever do.
As for changing it, it's a simple plug and two bolts.  |

The reg went on the 98 cbr600 f3 I got shortly after I got my mitts on it.
I did read up on it a little and heard a lot about other brands of regs lasting a lot longer (although requiring soldering etc) but then found an F3 reg at a good price and just went for it.
However, that being said, a fried reg doesn't match the symptoms you have mentioned. If the reg is fried it will kill your battery, the bike starting fine later suggests your battery is fine
Give it a test to see what's happening with the reg then it'll be clearer as to where to look.
