So I recently decided to change the oil on my 2002 Yamaha YZF R6, and having a filter on order for tomorrow I decided to drain the oil tonight.
Jump in the garage, find the right socket piece for the drain nut and start at it.

Then the drain nut and a piece of the metal snap off completely. See pics (ignore captions haha..).

Basically is my bike knackered? How could this have happened? It was twisting okay and then there was a small oil leak and it came off...
And any ideas what parts I'll need and how much this is going to cost me? Cringe.. Thanks in advance guys.

Yeah that was my first thought!! Haha..

After looking at it it seems to be the lower part of the engine casing(? Correct me if I'm wrong, please!) which is held on by bolts... Will ask my local MOTer and work shop what they reckon tomorrow.

Oh yes, thats fucked.

We're you turning it the wrong way?, the way it's broken off would lead me to say so.

You might be able to get it welded but another sump i presume would be the way to go.

If it is a engine casing then its a "cheap" fix if its on the block then welding is only option really

New sump, (and don't forget gasket), piece of piss job, relatively speaking.

Torque wrench and correct torque spec for sump bolts definitely recommended ...

It will be on the sump. 30 quid off ebay will fix it, plus a gasket.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll order that piece and look out for a gasket as well.
Definitely wasn't turning it the wrong way, I'm not useless!
Expensive oil.change at any rate Sad cheers again! Will post back how it all goes, for anyone who cares haha.

Edit - will a gasket really cost me the best part of £20?..

Make your own with gasket paper or use a decent liquid gasket like Three Bond. Thumbs Up

Sump plate +gasket, unless Yamahahaha specify Yamabond or equivalent. Thankfully the motor doesn't have to drop out. Remove and clean oil pick up filter if fitted. Torque wrench on rebuild. As stated above, righty tighty, lefty loosy when you are FACING the bolt, some chump I know forgot this once... Embarassed

GASKET STRAINER COVER 2C013 41401 about £15 !

Don't mess about with sealant if it blocks an oil way you will be looking for another engine

Yes,

If I was doing it I'd get genuine part, and do it properly rather than diy gasket or sealant.

If it's worth doing then it's worth doing right on stuff like this.

Bearing in mind you should be twisting to the left looking up from directly underneath it?

So why is the bolt fully screwed in against the bit of sump you have?

The joys of a steel bolt, and an alloy casing right there.

New sump required as said, so not as bad as it could have been.

That sump plug has definitely been heavily over-tightened. Look at the wrinkles in the sealing face and the way the corners have been wrung off in the clockwise direction. If the OP didn't mess up because the bolt is facing upwards (easily done) then the last person wrenched it up too tight and did the damage then.

Fit a Fumoto drain plug - to drain the oil you just remove the locking clip and turn a lever - never risk thread damage ever again.
If you accidentally overfill - no problem. No more hot oil on your hands or fishing for your drain plug again Smile

Unfortunately not a suitable solution for every bike.
