Took my ybr125 into the garage because the electric start wasnt working.

They charged me £133 for reconditioning the alternator (inc. £2.50 for topping up the oil)...is this an average price or have I been diddled?

It wouldn't start so they reconditioned the alternator, maybe it was knackered and not charging your battery hence no juice to start it. £133 for a rewind seems... reasonable.

Whether that was the case or not... who knows.

Well my new alternator for the Blackbird was £90 all in with gaskets. That was brand new and would take half and hour > 45 mins, so an hours labour really, they might charge more... but realistically it is 1 hour. So, diddled.. not really, but its a piece of cake job that you could have DIY and saved £££ Thumbs Up

Because your average garage rewinds stators on a regular basis, of course.

If they fitted a reconditioned stator to replace your old one, then yes, I'd say that £133 for parts & labour sounds about right. If they're claiming that they rewound it for you, when they just charged the battery, then you'd have been entering 'just been screwed' territory.

What year YBR?

Any error codes flashing?

I ask as old this thread about a non starting 2009 YBR talks about error codes from the various flashing frequency of the dash lights.

Then there's this other old thread about a non starting YBR. TL;DR it was the battery.

You should feel a little embarassed that your bike was low on oil. It's something you should check more regularly.

However, it does show they gave your bike a once over while it was there. £133 doesn't seem to bad

I do check my oil fairly regularly..I assumed they were taking advantage a wee bit as I cant really demand that they take back £2.50's worth of oil can I?

I was playing devil's advocate to be honest. I imagine a new stator would be cheaper than a rewind, and as said I doubt they'd do it themselves - so would probably charge more than that for a rewind (outsource + profit on top).

They generally send them to a rewind specialist, like Westcountry Windings.

(The last bit stopping my VFR getting back on the road is waiting for the rewound stator to come back...)

Don't make me crack out the captain obvious memes.

On a side note, am I the only one that's found West Country Windings a) to be inappropriately named, given that they're now based in Harlow, and b) more expensive than a replacement stator typically is?

I recall they wanted £180 for a cg 2 coil stator, i eventually got one for £30 from a breaker, but they're still in business so someone will pay it out of desperation.

Pitstop Motorcycles in Warrington did my 2 pole stator on my CG for £45 with postage back to me. The garage themselves don't do the rewind but hand them to a local chap who does it for them. I found them recommended on UKGSer as WCW had gone to pot. They did a good job Thumbs Up

A place near me (Nottingham) does rewinds and repairs on mostly classic and rare pieces. Also makes a bit out of authenticating and certificating replacement clocks ie if you buy a set that say 22000 miles on them when actually your bike has only done 12000, he certificates and documents this.

Hi
Your starter wasn't working so they rewound the stater? Confused , would it not have been the starter motor, connection or switch?, mine has clicked twice in the 10k I put on it and both times it was sticking brushes, Am I missing something here?. I think yes they charged to much.

My dead stator stopped the bike turning as it kills the battery by not charging it.

It was the overall cause in my case.

Does it all now work as it should? If so then you have got what you wanted and £133 is not that bad for the work that they have done. Anything done at a garage is retail pricing, that's how they stay in business.
