I know there's a multitude of tattoo threads around here, but here's another.

I've fancied a tattoo for a long time but it had to be 'the right one'. A club in Cardiff called the Hippo was a way of life for two years, and they had the most excellent cartoon hippo on their flyers. Unfortunately, it closed in 2002 and I don't have any of those particular flyers left. So, until recently there was nothing that fitted the bill.

I'm getting married in a month and don't wear jewellery. I thought a tattoed alternative to a ring would be the ideal first, so here it is:

https://daverave999.com/tattoosmall.jpg

This is immediately after I had it done hence it's a bit greasy and blurry as the template is still there. I did have a moment's hesitance the morning before, though I had spent the morning emptying my stomach after a heavy night out so wasn't in the best place emotionally! I have considered this for many months and it only felt right that this should be my first.
The artist was a little hesitant to give me my first tattoo on my hand, but I'm 34 and take full responsibility for my own actions! Also, I work in a field where there will be no negative connotations to this kind of personal expression and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

I'm very pleased with it, and I have the feeling it may well be joined by others in the future. I'm waiting at least a year before the next so I don't get caught up in the initial enthusiasm!

Just thought I'd share this with you, as I shared becoming a biker with you lot too. Wink

Initial thoughts are "here we go, another fool getting hand tattoo, hes gonna regret it"!

Get used to that inital impression.

After reading your post though, I think its great and i'm sure your bride to be will love it. Can't go taking that off before entering a bar either!

Best of luck with your big day, and take care of that tatt very well!

I don't mean to be a shite about this, but you better hope you don't split up Laughing my fiancee is having laser removal on some shite tattoos she had done (by somebody she later discovered was unlicensed Mad) and it's £100 a pop, and you need possibly up to 15-25 sessions depending on the colour Shocked

I'm really not a fan of tattoos, much less ones like these (unless you get your kid's names done, because they can't divorce you) but if you like it then enjoy it Thumbs Up

Doesn't matter just say the date resembles something else like the day your uncle died or some BS Laughing

I hope there is no reason what so ever your wedding has to be postponed. Mine got delayed a month and there practically nothing involved in my wedding.

When you split up you just claim it was the date you got your first tattoo. It's not far off it.

Probably should have waited until [s]he said "I do" before getting the tattoo.

The lady has had her ankle done with all our parents' names so she'll be worse off if we split! We got them done before so they don't need to heal on the honeymoon. Tbh, in the unlikely event of a delay, it will make for a funny story. It's the symbolism that's the point for us.

I understand those who think I've made the wrong choice but I won't try to change your view. This was definitely right for us.

Unbelievable that you've got this done BEFORE the wedding!!!!

Im pretty superstitious and I would be shitting myself for the next 4 weeks incase something happened betwee now and then. I dont mean splitting up necessarily, but you never know if one of you gets ill and you have to postpone.

Im sure it will be fine. ....but youre a brave man.

I have my wedding date engraved inside my wedding ring, so I understand the sentiment behind it.

It would also inform everyone that he will be dead forever. Very helpful.

Might have been an idea to research a bit more, its my understanding that finger tattoos do not hold well and fade a lot - to the degree I've read a lot of studios refusing to do them (probably because they have to constantly retouch them up). So that will likely render that unreadable before long.

I did actually. Wink
My research suggested the upper flesh of the finger is much lower wear and holds ink far better, hence I have it so central on top. I discussed at some length with the artist as this was my main concern, and also the size of text blurring over time. He said with the tight needle grouping he used and modern inks, blur should be minimal. The possibility of fade was also why I had the infinity symbol on the back of my hand, as I liked the metaphor of the wedding date slowly fading with time (if it did) but the infinity symbol staying stronger. Of course, I can also get it touched up!

It's more the symbolism of my first tattoo being a wedding ring alternative, though I obviously would like the marriage and the tattoo to last forever!

[EDIT] A understand the cynicism from some of you, and you would justifiably laugh at me if it all goes tits up. It may come across as naivety or tempting fate, but this was the most realistically practical course of action with how we planned to do things.

The infinity symbol makes it look like a cock and balls.

What a fucking horrifying multi-levelled error. It literally does look like a dick and balls as the poster above stated as well as breaking one of the first rules of tattoo.

Devastating.

I'll never understand why people need to have things permanently marked on them in order that they don't for get about the significance. Perhaps it's because I'm not that retarded to either forget a significant item (like the name of my child), or think that the best way to remember said fact is to have it written in my skin.

Might be an unpopular reply, but it is really cheesy and a shit tattoo. Fingers are notorious for not holding ink as Ghost' said. Already you can see blow out of the lettering where the tattooist has gone too deep. I am not surprised they didn't want to initially do it.

I would have spent the money on a ring instead after all, marriage is a change of your life, so wearing a ring would have been a better option or getting a tattoo in my opinion.

Still, you can laser it when it turns into a blob.
