Someone might be along to help you, but in the mean time, I've always found https://www.viragotechforum.com very helpful.

Just spent a while getting my knowledge back up to speed. Your starter is at the front of the engine and then the teeth mesh with a starter clutch assembly. If the sprag clutch is fubar then it won't engage. You need to take the side casing off and have a good look around and provide us with many pictures. ____________________ Haz ER-5, innit! |

It won't be that hard to do, like you say, just time consuming and a bit of a pain in the arse, get to your local yamaha dealer and get the workshop manual they might be nice enough to print some pages off for you or burn you a copy. If you struggle, I'll get one for you. ____________________ Haz ER-5, innit! |

It will be the starter clutch failed or the bolt that hold it to the back of the alternator rotor
Seen a few do this
Hope it is the bolt the stater clutch is over £150 + vat ____________________ Dave
