Hi, new here so hope someone can help. My daughters 535 is not starting. I have had the starter off and tested it, it spins freely when starter pushed but does not engage the flywheel. Is this likely to be a battery, solenoid or starter motor issue? Its not making any strange noises, just spinning.
Thanks in advance.
Mark

Someone might be along to help you, but in the mean time, I've always found https://www.viragotechforum.com very helpful.

It's been a long long time since I worked on one of those and without a workshop manual I couldn't really help, I'll have a look and see if I can find one but in all honesty If the motor spins freely off the bike, does it spin freely when you have mounted it back up? or is there just no sound and no movement?

If you can find a workshop manual for your bike I highly recommend it before I suggest anything else. I can't remember how these engines are put together, If you can lend a starter motor of another 535 owner then I'd hazard a punt at that. I only say that because it sounds like your motor is getting a feed from the starter circuit but because itself is either faulty or the starter clutch assembly is faulty it is unable to engage.

Just spent a while getting my knowledge back up to speed. Your starter is at the front of the engine and then the teeth mesh with a starter clutch assembly. If the sprag clutch is fubar then it won't engage. You need to take the side casing off and have a good look around and provide us with many pictures. Laughing

It won't be that hard to do, like you say, just time consuming and a bit of a pain in the arse, get to your local yamaha dealer and get the workshop manual they might be nice enough to print some pages off for you or burn you a copy. If you struggle, I'll get one for you. Thumbs Up

It will be the starter clutch failed or the bolt that hold it to the back of the alternator rotor

Seen a few do this

Hope it is the bolt the stater clutch is over £150 + vat
