Part of getting my R6 ready for the track this year meant needing to replace the instrument dash - which had started to rot - with something new. I decided that along with the rev counter and temperature guage my new version was going to incorporate an onboard lap timer... here's how it came to be: (click pictures for large versions)

https://www.kornel.com/pics/Dash/t_P1010006.jpg https://www.kornel.com/pics/Dash/t_P1010007.jpg

First step involved getting hold of the foam I needed for the backing, I needed something both fairly strong and also waterproof. After some searching I found something called a "cycle carrier spacer" in Halfords that was weather resistant and thick enough to handle the task. I marked it up to the dimensions I wanted and drew on the instruments and fixing screws.

https://www.kornel.com/pics/Dash/t_P1010012.jpg https://www.kornel.com/pics/Dash/t_P1010013.jpg

To cut the oval shape I used an upside down jigsaw mounted in a vice. With the saw running and the trigger locked I could move the foam about using the metal plate of the saw as a cutting table. The edges came out almost perfect, certainly a lot better than my first attempt with a stanley knife. The rev counter and temp guage holes were just drilled out with hole saws, and the mounting holes punched through.

The lap timer I found wasn't intended to be mounted as an instrument, so I had to open up the case and add two mounting pillars - small bolts with the heads ground down fixed to the back of the case. I then cut out a rectangle of clear plastic to cover the back of the hole in the foam backing and glued it in place.

Next I drilled the appropriate holes to fix the timer to the backing plate and attached a thumb switch to the left handle bar to serve as the manual trigger. I added a quick release connector into the wiring to enable the manual switch to be replaced by an i/r receiver - for use with a trackside lap beacon.

And here it is all finished up:

i would love that, but not for timing laps, but more timing roads, and checking my belief that im faster going up a road say, then down on certain stretches and things like that.

The dash used on the rs series and other has a lap timer.
However it's a finger operated one, while I would presume korn's can take an input from a beacon reciever. Wouldn't be much use for what br wants however. Is a lot less hassle to get accurate laps when you're trying to slip stream a ducati Smile.

Yep it does. Has a little thumb button on the left switchgear to mark when you cross the line. So damn cool, I just wish it had an engine to match. Laughing Crying or Very sad

Erm, you use your forefinger on my rs250 Confused ... might explain why you were having problems using your thumb Smile.

Oooooohh, bad joke. Razz

On the 125 it's a teeny button just to the left and under the indicator buttons if I remember right. Thinking Must admit I've not used it once since I bought the bike though so I could be wrong.

Korn, there may be a problem with your lap timer... it doesn't show enough digits on the screen for your lap times

Looks excellent, I did something similar, except I superglued an old watch over my non-working tacho.

Be nice to see pics when the fairings are back on.

Nice work Korn. now all you have to do is get the the thing on the track.

perhaps you might be able to switch it as a rear view camera monitor as well !!

Does the Fire Extinguisher you glued to the back of the foam help with cornering?

Most of Sunday evening, on and off with other stuff that needed doing.

Also, since the bike is on a daylight MOT if I ever want to ride it on the road the handlebar switch can be used to operate a horn (required for the MOT) and I'm going to make up a little insert so I can swap the lap timer out for a digital speedo.

That's kool Korn Smile ...but the foamy bit looks a little lardy to me. What bore is that Brembo? The connecting the M/C to the reservoir looks mighty heavy duty...
