My little msx 125 has just clicked over 750 miles, and in order to keep its warranty, was due a dealer service at 600 miles.

As it's the easiest bike in the world to service, I've already done this myself, but in order to keep the warranty, I'll need to get this done by mr Honda, or a n other dealer, for the sum of £80 to Change 900 ml of oil and give everything a little wiggle

Is it worth paying £80 for the all important stamp in order to keep the warranty? What does BCF think?

£80 to keep it in warranty or pay £400-£500 for a part that may fail later on because the warranty hasn't been honored?

I will let you decide.

Last I checked, the warranty only required that the first service be carried out by a card-carrying Honda-approved dealership.

Maybe, but you're going to be selling it on to 17 year olds at some point who probably won't pay extra because you have had it serviced properly...

If it was bigger than a 125 then I would flat out say yes.

Just my opinion of course Wink

On that basis it seems unnecessary. I wouldn't take insurance on any other £500 risk. Even less so where the premium is 16% of the mitigated risk

Whereas a 125 would probably be the only new machine I'd ever keep up with the servicing schedule because they have a tendency to hold their value and have a high turnaround as people are keen to move onto bigger stuff.
There are enough new older riders looking for well maintained machines with FSH that you wouldn't have to entertain some 17 year old looking for a cheaper unserviced machine.

A bigger one I might do the first two services as you never know what a new bike might throw up in problems in it's first few months, thereafter I doubt if I'd bother as I tend to look at keeping my machines for a good while (that and with the experience/facilities to do all maintenance work myself I object to paying top notch money to a dealership who then get the new apprentice to do oil changes and simple works)

Honda warranty has been very good on the bigger bike, and they have replaced both tyres on the nc after I complained of premature tyre wear.

With regard to the little msx, I think it's unlikely any buyer would be an older buyer looking for a learner legal machine. I bought it as I wanted a road legal pit bike but didn't want anything made from cheese by a Chinese manufacturer. It's currently delivering maximum levels of lulz per mile.

It's 2500 mile service interval means that it could prove pricy to continue to dealer service it. At 120mpg, servicing would cost more than the fuel to drive that distance.

Fair enough, just checked their warranty Q+A.

But what if the 17 year old comes along to see the bike accompanied by his dad? Maybe dad won't hand money over for an unserviced bike. You bought a new bike so what's £80 in the grand scheme of things?

A first service on a modern Honda? Yes, I'd do that.

I'm surprised you didn't get that included in the price.

I kept up with getting my 125 serviced at a Yamaha dealer for practically the length of the two year warranty. It was only the last one in that period that I didn't (mainly as the local dealership around the area I moved to wanted £70 p/h labour charge. Laughing )

Tbh, it served me reasonably well, as I've had a few minor things that have needed doing under the warranty claim. (Replacement sensor for the speedo, a new top piece/strip on the tank as it spontaneously started to crack one day and a few problems with it overheating sorted out).

Overall the cost has probably evened out over getting it serviced independently and having to pay out for those things myself (it was only £45 p/h at a Yamaha dealership on the Isle of Man). However, if something major had gone wrong, it could have been a different story. At the end of the day, as someone who had/has very limited knowledge of bikes or any mechanics in general, it's good to have the peace of mind knowing you can just drop it off to get sorted should a problem occur.

I probably could have got a few things thrown in if I was prepared to pay list, but I wasn't Smile

Great looking bike, I'd love one of those Smile

I always do my own servicing, I keep all receipts and document the servicing and I've never had a problem selling my bikes. For me it's worked out more cost effective but I've never had anything break under warranty period....
