Gotta say I'm surprised by the reaction here, I would have expected a much more liberal attitude to guns. Still, everyone's entitled and all that.

What interests me most is the fact that there seems to be a strong vibe of 'automatic weapons are pointless'. Now I agree they are overkill for home defense (I don't think anyone is buying that argument). But consider this - they are fun, something that rarely gets taken into consideration in safety arguments. So the question becomes, at what stage do you say the risk outweighs the fun to the point they should be banned? Now, that's the kind of question that will have as many answers as people, but all I can think is, there have been a lot more killed in motorcycle accidents than shooting range accidents in the states this last year.

As to this particular incident, it sucks, and the child will suffer long term most likely, but the blame rests with the instructor.

No reason a kid can't shoot guns, but I'd say .22s, four-tens and 28 gauge might be a bit more suitable.

Letting a kid "fire" a Uzi would probably be safe if said adult is hugging around the kid with their hands controlling the weapon. In much the same way that your dad lets you "drive" a motorbike sat on the tank when you are a little kid, but really he has full control of the bars the entire time.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but when letting someone fire a full-auto weapon for the first time, loading mags with only 2 rounds is a pretty useful way to limit the damage should said shooter go full-retard. Once they have that down, try a mag with 3, 4, 5 rounds etc etc.

Also another reason to make sure all firing done by novice shooter is done from the prone position, as it is in cadets, it is orders of magnitudes harder to flop about in an unsafe manner when lying down on the deck as opposed to sitting/standing etc.
