Hey all, quick question.

Does anyone know if you have a car in tax band B or C (£20/£30 tax a year) would you be given a refund (of course it would be a tiny amount) for remaining months?

Shouldn't be such a peasant to worry about such a trivial amount of £££

Thanks all, Well I tried to look it up and had no luck, but was just wondering. Mum sold her Fusion which is £30 a year and was having a debate between her and my stepdad whether she'd get the money back for it considering it's a little amount or not. I thought it was done automatically and they send it to you, but she hasn't recieved anything since she sold it a few months ago.. I don't know. How long would it even take for them to send you a refund anyway?

I sold a car on 4th October, 4 days after they brought in the new rules!

After sending the V5 back I got an automatic tax refund for the remaining full months after about 2 weeks.

Assuming the 'sold' date on the V5 when you sent it off was after 1st October, then you should get an automatic refund.

[edit] Just seen you've said "a few months ago". The new rules weren't in until the 1st October, so she won't get any refund - the new owner has inherited the remaining time on the tax disc.

Ahh yeah, new law didn't start till the 1st and she sold it before that. So yeah, she wouldn't get a refund, but I'd assume then she would (At like £2.50 per month remaining) if she had sold it after that date.. can't find anything on it that says the lower bands are excluded so.. I'll let them know. Cheers for your replies everyone.

You've always been able to claim a refund for complete unused months, but you had to send the tax disc back. As the tax is no longer transferable you (supposedly) get an automatic refund these days, if you don't have a physical disc.

But in this transition period you should still be able to send the disc back, for any amount, if you have it.
