Hi,

I know a guy who's looking for a motorcycle. I have one which is not being used. I'm willing to let him use it provided I can use it occasionally (e.g. once a month). He'll have to do a bit of work on the machine first but otherwise it's a very sound bike - just needs some small bits sorted out which i don't have the time to do (overall less than 2-3h work).

Is there a way to legally share a bike. I don't want to be prosecuted for the bike being parked incorrectly or for anything else that could happen? He looks like a sound bloke though.

Don't

Unless you are related, infact even then just don't. It's asking for a headache/ballache/pointless drama.

Back in the 80s let a mate borrow my 350LC because I got a can't get to work sob story. When it wouldn't start one morning he punched and dented the tank. Never got it sorted or paid me...

So don't, just don't. Thumbs Down

This is how I rode many motorbikes during my lean years (as in low pay), my mates/step-brother would just lend me their bikes as and when I wanted.

I cannot help you with the legalities I'm afraid, it was years ago, and things have changed massively 'insurance wise' these days.

I'm sure Paddy will know about this...he's the sort who will happily lend a spare motorbike to a mate. Thumbs Up

I'd only do it to close friends/family.

A mate of mine lent his bike a year old 600RR to a 'friend' while he was recovering from Knee Surgery. The day he was due to give it back the friend cunted it into the side of the van, completely writing it off. I don't know the financial ins and outs but he never got anywhere near the value off the bloke.

Asking for trouble really...

I've loaned a few bikes out, I'd say 3 have been handed back in as close to similar condition, 4 have been returned crashed and essentially written off and 1 never came back.

1 came back damaged but was paid for, so does restore faith in people! Thumbs Up

Legalities, insurance. Who owns it, insuring another persons bike when they "own it" can be a decision swayer for insurance.

Where it is stored... if its stolen, are you going to ask your mate to pay for it or let insurance deal with it, again...see the point above. Any way to not pay out will be used.

In short, I loan bikes for a day or whatever so people can either try it, if they aren't in the position to buy one but want to know what it rides like then I'll loan it. However loaning overnight stuff is left to close friends and family, even then its heavily reserved.

I guess I won't share it. I thought it was asking for trouble as well to be honest.

I have a bike on long term loan to a friend, It is my RXS it's worth fuck all and has some sentimental value so I said he could use it. He has spent a bit on it doing it up and looks after it so I am happy for him to use it for as long as he wants. I signed the V5 over to him, and have just said give it back when you get something else.

Loaned a bike to Alexio, my KH125. He moved to Chatham so I gave it to him to commute to work as he started working with me. He nipped out late at night and when he returned he didn't bother chaining it up.

It was stolen that night. I've never seen, nor been paid out for it, he disappeared.

It's about 3 bolts to change a CG125 engine.

If the 'mechanics' in Africa can do it with hammers, I'm sure you can.

I've only had one problem after lending someone my bike; the clutch basket broke into many small pieces when they did a wheelie. Laughing But it wasn't really a problem cos I then borrowed one of their bikes whilst sorting a replacement engine from a breakers. They paid £100 towards it (if my memory serves me correctly) and helped with the engine swap so alls well that ends well.

I wouldn't bother unless its someone you know and trust. The fact you're asking about legalities and stuff like parking tickets suggests that you're questioning how trustworthy the guy is.

As Paddy and the bike he lent to Alexio shows, a parking ticket should be the least of your concerns if lending a vehicle someone. Bin it, you've bought it should go without saying... lose it and you've bought it even moar so!

Whereas I'm quite happy to lend my bikes to people - they are always well aware that:
a) they shall maintain/repair bike so that it's returned in the same state that it was lent
b) upsetting me is never a good idea, be it family or friend, as I have a very short rein on some rather unsociable characteristics!

I've co owned a bike for a while with my dad, and maybe in the right circumstances I'd co own something with a mate too. But if the other person that's using the bike does not have any cash tied up in it, then they won't care about it simples!

I wonder how married blokes get on with having a nicely sorted family car that's either a sporty model, or something they have put time and work into making decent and a bit pride and joy?

I can't imagine if you had just for example say a mint Corrado VR6 slammed and polished to glassy perfection, rolling on 18" Diamond cut BBS split rims, letting the wife ram it up and down curbs and into shopping trolly's, or againsts bollards, fence posts or parked cars in the supermarket car park while trying to find a space and keep the screaming brats inside quiet! Laughing

Whenever I've thrown my leg over someone elses bike, I've done it knowing I've got cash in the bank for a replacement.

The wife drives quite well and looks after the car as she's been told how to get up kerbs if needs be (mandatory for parking outside our house)

She did refuse to drive my old car, but then it had been my gran's when I was growing up so worried about doing something wrong - the fact it was over 30 years old didn't help!

Only time I have and will ever likely lend my bike was to the owner of the company I work for, who is definitely good for money and a friend who at the same time lent me his ER-6, so all good.

If I crashed it, I'd pay for it 100%, major dick move otherwise.

I very rarely accept offers from other people to let me ride their bike, long term loans are out of the question to anyone.

Same rules apply to me, I'd only ride or borrow if I could pay back that amount by the end of that day. With Jesus all things are possible etc.
