2004 R6

From when I bought it the electrics were always playing up - alarm goes off on it's own, indicators sometimes both come on so instead of having indicators I just have hazards..

Recently turned it on and the fan(which never comes on because it never gets hot enough) came on and stayed on after I switched my bike off which drained the battery

Had to jump it and it was fine, then it did it again next time.

Charged the battery and got my bike home and it's snowed recently so haven't used it, went to start it before and the battery is dead. Jumped it and the fan came on..

Not sure what to do, the fan is draining my battery but this time the fan wasn't on but my battery still died.. unless it came on after I'd turned it off but I probably would've heard it

My dad suggested I just cut the wire for my fan and wrap some tape around it. Seems plausible, just wondering will this fk my bike up at all?

What does the wiring look like in general? If it is chopped to pieces then maybe think about a new loom otherwise it's time to get the wiring diagram out and look at things like whether the fan and indicators are perhaps shorting in the same connector/fuse box type area.

PS - electrical gremlins suck balls.

I'd struggle changing the oil mate so looking at anything electrical is beyond me. My Dad does all my maintenance more or less and this is beyond him

Also does anyone know what the second fuse is for in the box next to the battery? there's 2 red 40amp ones, I blew one by trying to jump it wrong

To be bluntly obvious, I guessed it was beyond your dad on the basis he suggested just cutting the fan wire to switch it off.

You started with dodgy indicators and now have a permanently live fan. You can't cut the live wire to everything.

And if it is 40amp,then I'd expect it to be a major one. The simplest way to see what it is, is to see what is no longer working now it has blown. Wink

First thing I'd do is rip the alarm off and sling it down the street.

No. Smash it up so nobody else can ever use it. Alarms are hateful things.

I've looked at the (difficult to follow0 wiring diagram and the fan is switched by a relay which is fed live power and controlled by the ECU. So either the fan relay is stuck closed or the ECU remains powered AND thinks the engine is too hot.

Find the fusebox and pull te fuse for the fan, that should let you keep the charge in the battery, though it won't cure the underlying fault.

Put your location in your profile and you might find someone is nearby who can help. If you're in Kent I can spare some time this week.

Did you ever bump start her rather than jumping (jumping is using another battery, bump is by push starting). The reason I ask is because shortly after doing so to my cbr600 couple years ago the regulator died and refused to charge. The occasional flat battery issue was caused by oxford hotgrips being left on (which are suppost to turn off before they flatten battery, guess what? Mad ). So I suspect bump starting might not do the reg much good, which was recommended against in the manual probably for this reason.

Regs are relatively cheap, borrow a multimeter and check if she is charging properly. Also check your stator and reg connections for corrosion and heat damage.

I would also be checking your indicator switch and all front loom connectors. Open them up, check for corrosion and spray with graphite lube or wd40. Check resistance of the fan switch at the relevant temperatures, connector for corrosion..

Take it to a garage mate before it ends up costing you more money!

This is my thinking too. For the time your spending on it just take it to a garage that you trust(get a recommendation) and spend the £100-£200 and get it sorted.

I wouldn't have thought it would that hard to fix for someone who know's what they are doing. Just sounds like a wiring fault or a faulty switch.
