Honda CB600F5 Hornet will not start.

Ok any ideas will be appreciated. The bike is a Honda Hornet 600, 2005.

With the recent cold weather the bike has been hard to start, I thought this might be due to a week battery or problem with the charging system. In any case after a bit of trying, either just using the choke or a bit of choke with throttle, I had always, until now been able to start it.

I have have just checked the plugs which were in good condition, with a bit of black carbon on the ceramic part and dark Gray on the electrodes. they looked close to what was recommended in the Haynes manual. So i cleaned them with a wire brush and checked the distances, all seamed good.

After re fitting the plugs, and trying to start with a charged battery, the bike would turn over but not start. It fired a bit but would not start, a couple of times back firing.

I also looked at the air filter, which looked clean, although there was a bit tiny bit of oil residue in the bottom of the box which I cleaned.

So now with a charged battery it will turnover with the choke fully on, but not start. With no choke or semi choke it fires a bit but will not start, sometimes misfiring.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It sounds like a fuelling issue to me, so a carburettor strip and clean might be on the cards.

A weak battery can also cause problems, so check the system with a voltmeter - noting the readings across the battery with the ignition on, and also whilst cranking on the starter.

If the voltage drops too much below 12v, this could cause the CDI unit to malfunction.

if the plugs wet then it a spark problem ... have you got you kill switch on is there any other cut off switches that you may bypass to simply rule them out it doesn't have a clutch switch or side stand ??

i heard of a few cases with some bikes you choke is not stuck on .. causing it to flood?
