Possibly helpful bit: The advice for Enfields is to put it in 2nd then roll backwards until you're stopped by compression.
Pointless aside: There's also a whole set of rituals involving pre-kicking under decompression/valve lift, listening for compression stroke whoosh, and finding TDC by watching the ammeter twitch while you slowwwwly turn it over. I followed them religiously until I realised that it was still a lottery whether it fires on the first kick, and I can be off a lot quicker by just climbing on and stamping away until I get lucky. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
