Just had to replace one of the coolant hoses on the ER6 after it split and looks like I need to do the other one.
Looking at the inside of the split one you can see just how much it is perished. Keep in mind this bike is only 7 years old and there are many bikes with more years on them on original pipework so check your hoses before the upcoming season starts Wink

Not having a lot of luck with rubber stuff are you mate?

Might want to check your gimp suit/gas mask in case it's splitting at the seams Very Happy

Thing is the manufacturers recommend replacement every 3-5 years and the Japanese Shaken requires a 3 yearly replacement on coolant hoses, maybe they are right.

Yeah most people don't realise that fuel lines have a service life either.

The greatest problem there is Neoprene ones are sold for bikes and Ethanol eats them in a matter of months.

Is this a particular problem with bikes, or modern vehicles in general? Some of the hoses on my Landrover are 47 years old.

Old Series vehicles are VERY under stressed so everything tends to last longer BUT at 47 years they probably need replacing.

My GPZ500 was 9 years old when I got it. The coolant hoses crackled when squeezed gently.

Well, I'm sure the next owner replaced them. Whistle

That the link pipe from radiator to water pump? My GF's 57 ER6 is just about OK, but not looking great. I dismantled the pump over the weekend owing to oil coming out the weep hole with the engine running, currently awaiting replacement seals. Not that uncommon on the ER6 either.

Are you replacing with oem original part, or cut length from somewhere else?

Its actually the top hose, the bottom has already been replaced and needs doing again. Got all the seals here for the water pump, will be doing that when I get a chance.

Cradleys have all the bits in stock btw.

Read this post...interesting.....I normally buy any bits I need from Cradley but I've been checking the ads for silicon hoses and the prices seem more-or-less comparable.......anyone have any opinions or experiences with these things ?.

Road salt and cold temps don't help when it comes to rubber parts.

I find more failures from contamination than actual perishing though, like from head gasket failure softening the hoses (more often egr cooler leaking on cars) or running with no anti freeze making the inside brittle and leading to a build up of corrosion on the pipe joints.

It is strange that the hoses are recommended for changing every three years when modern antifreeze lasts 5 years+.

Have you pressure tested/ gas sniffed the system to make sure you don't have a headgasket issue?

Given the advances in modern materials and the relatively short length of hose on a motorcycle. Why someone would replace a perished rubber radiator (or fuel) hose with another rubber radiator hose is entirely beyond me.

One word: Silicone.

It's heat resistant enough to rest against the exhaust without melting. It's solvent resistant enough to use it as fuel hose. Gets the thumbs-up from me.

Only thing to watch is taking it round sharp bends. It can kink. You sometimes need to buy a pre-bent corner.

Pipes on my 1995 CBR600 f3 look origional..
Was thinking of replacing them but it almost seems as if manufacturers realised 'Make parts last 25 minutes instead of forever = profit".

Pretty cynical but everything is going that way...

New cars being the worst.

My 2005 307 has given me a shed load more trouble than the 1998 306... go figure...

A few years ago I had a pretty scary hose failure on my Morris Minor. The fuel hose connecting the fuel pump on the bulkhead to the carburettor started leaking at the midpoint, dripping fuel onto the top of the exhaust pipe while the engine was running Shocked. It'd been happening for some time as I'd noticed an increase in fuel consumption, but couldn't work out why until one day I stopped the car and smelt fuel. Because the hose had a braided covering, I couldn't see the degradation in the rubber hose underneath until it started leaking.
