Alright lads,

Recently the speedo cable broke on me and when I drove it, and tried to redline it , the engine management light would come on and a rev limiter would kick in , like the bike was choking itself , there was 3 flashes of the engine management light when the kill switch was hit

So I replaced the speedo cable thinking it was that causing the issue but its still happening :S

Now there is 4 flashes of the engine management light instead

What has changed since before this happened:

*Engine oil change
*HID kit installed ( No wires modified to do this - its plug & play)
*Basic alarm installed (Only two wires to the battery - no wires modified)
*Speedo cable broken

What i've tried so far:

*Speedo cable replaced
*Disconnecting the the loom and the alarm/HID kit from the battery overnight
*Tested the resistance of the TPS sensor which is reading at just over 6ohms

Chattin to a lad today he mentioned that it might be something to do with the solenoids or wires corroding near the battery? :S

Its nearly like a restriction kit is installed in it now, thats what it feels like when you get to a certain amount of revs it just keeps bouncing at like 3k

Anybody every come across this ?

How exactly is the engine management light flashing?

1 long and 3 short, 3 long and 1 short, or 4 short flashes?

1+3 would be for the TPS, 3+1 would be for the Cylinder-#2 ignition coil, 4 would be an ECU fault.

TPS normally reads between 2k and 3k ohms.

Thanks for the reply !

It is flashing 4 long flashes after the kill switch is hit when it happens during driving.

If I power off the ignition the fault clears itself until i try redline again

Not sure about 4 long - what year is the bike, and do you have an LCD display for the trip meter?

Its a 2005, nope its the analogue

I was drawn towards the TPS, but on the way home I pinned the throttle at 30mph in 5th gear and only until it got to the higher rev range did it crap itself.

argh I thought these were basic bikes that nothing really goes wrong with !

It would be best if you could get hold of the service manual and look through the diagnostic codes.

I could only find the list for later models, and 4 long flashes refers to the 'secondary injector' which I don't think you have.

4 short flashes could also be an ECU general fault, but I also thought you had a TPS problem from those readings of 6 ohms.

In the service manual it states TPS but if I open the throttle fully in 5th gear , the engine management light doesnt come on until the higher revs going towards 80mph.

Its past a certain rev range that its throwing the fault

I am going to test by taking the two block connectors out of the clocks to see if it still does the same thing. or maybe it just isnt detecting the clocks speed and the TPS is throwing a fault.

*Scratches head*

Strange one.

Do you get the problem when revving in neutral, or is it also linked to road speed?

Could the HID Ballasts be causing some electro-magnetic or RFI interference?

I would guess the rev-counter gets it's data from the ecu - is the wiring good from end to end?

It does sound like the engine management is going into some kind of 'safe mode' possibly due to a faulty sensor.

I had a TPS problem with a mercedes a while back, which turned out to be a cracked carbon track. It only showed up at higher revs, due to vibration, and with more than 1/3 accelerator travel, due to the location of the crack.

No its just linked to road speed

I took the fuse out for the HID's before leaving for work this morning, still the same issue.

Well there is no rev counter on these, just a speedo, ill inspect the wiring.

Wires are fine,

Done a test tonight on the way home

At 50mph in 5th gear I pinned the throttle, after a few seconds as the revs climbed the usual thing happened

I flicked the ignition from the key, this always removes the management light

Still rolling at 40-45mph the clutch lever in , I pinned the throttle and no fault generated , hit the redline without any issue

As soon as I drove along normally and tried to redline again, yup it came on

Been reading that there is a system called the AIR for emissions.

I'm thinking maybe thats causing an issue? although strange it doesnt with the clutch lever in :S
