BT Infinity - Third Party Router

I'm thinking of jumping ship from Virgin Media after about 7 years. The speeds have dropped as my area is now oversubscribed and it's annoying me a lot. BT Infinity is available and seems comparable except much better upload speeds.

Thing is, I currently have my old Super Hub 2 set to modem mode so my DD-WRT loaded router can control the WAN/LAN bridge better in terms of port opening, static DHCP IPs, Wake On WAN etc. This is an arrangement I've been using for some years and would like to keep. What I need to know is, can the current BT Home Hub 5 be configured to allow this? Information from a couple of quick Google searches has conflicting info and I don't want to sign up until I know. The technical support lines don't allow me to get through and ask someone direct, they just loop back to assuming you're already a customer with a technical fault and request a phone number for BT which I don't have.

I don't use BT Infinity but I have an FTTC connection and an OpenRetch VDSL modem like the one in the link below. I use a MikroTik router.

I've just took up BT Infinity again after moving and they supplied us with the aforementioned HomeHub 5. You can't put it into modem only mode as I discovered and I ended up purchasing the white Openreach modem from eBay to utilize my TP-Link router.

I stuck the HomeHub upstairs as an access point which works while it blinks repeatedly that it can't make a broadband connection.

What model router with dd-wrt are you using?

It's a TP-Link WR1043ND running Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/22/14). I used to get 80-90Mbps on speedtest.net on the wireless using the MacBook Air when I had a faster BB speed some months ago before I took it down to 50Mbps.

Yeah DD-WRT ay need updating, it's all time to do it and test though as I work 50+ hours a week, BH weekend might be time.

Uplink cable is good, problem is with either the SH2 or something between my place and the head end. When I had a long hour on the phone with VM tech support I tried plugging straight in with the SH2 back in full modem router factory reset mode. Speed was just as bad on down, up has been restored to 3Mbps so it means at least I can VNC or TeamViewer into my home systems again. This is with the SH2 back in modem mode and the TP-Link router doing the rest.

Still seriously considering going to BT Infinity. If I can use an Openreach modem and still use a DD-WRT router for the extra features I could get a huge boost to my upload speed, useful for streaming content from my home LAN to anywhere else even for HD content.

I went from 30mb (as it was back then) Virgin to 'between 35-65mb' BT Infinty 2. Started at 30mb and slowly dwindled down to 10mb. Now have a slot for Virgin to be reconnected in early May.

Rule out network/home network issues before jumping ship.

I had massive issues with VM's fair use policy and traffic that should have been exempt causing my line to go into throttle+packetloss mode. I switched to BT with a house move and frankly, I've never looked back, the unlimited option infinity is reasonably priced, I get a solid 50mbps+ and I've never yet seen anything throttled (13TB uploaded in the last 2 years so lord knows I've tried )

It's an optional extra but the provided Wi-Fi was abysmal and locked down so Torrents were night on impossible to use plus we had no idea on monitoring and so forth.

I took out the contract and it was then split between 6 of us so it only worked out to £5 a month.

I have BT Infinity and have had a pretty good experience thus far in the first 8 months, my download speeds max out at 8.7MB/s.

I have downloaded a lot in the last couple of weeks since setting up my microserver (currently on 130gb in 2 weeks on my server alone with Sab) with no issues whatsoever. That doesn't include the games I've downloaded/updated on steam, ps plus games or xbox games with gold. I don't get throttled and there is no fair use policy.

Looking at my router I'm currently connected at

Downstream: 77.09 Mbps
Upstream: 19.53 Mbps

Virgin generally have much faster speeds, but at great cost in terms of reliability. Most people I know who crow about having 100MB+ speeds, will at one time or another, complain about outages and poor speed. My Sister-In-Law has been out for days and had numerous filters put in/removed and various tuning to make it stable. Then offer higher speeds for the same money, which makes their situation worse.

I've had BT Infinity for about 3 years now. I get 60/19, but that is solid all day long. It doesn't matter what I squirt down there speed is always the same (assuming the source is good for the full speed).

Even though I love to have faster speeds, it's fast/reliable enough for me. Can't remember the last time I was without internet.

Must be coming up for five years that I've had BT Infinity and it's been 100% problem free.
