Fireblade RRT (1996) misfire and ticking noise

I've changed the spark plugs which were black and sh*ty. The HT leads and coils look ok.. Its a loud ticking noise coming from around the head, hard to hear exactly where, i'd describe it as a tick rather than a knock and its related to the RPM, comes and goes on tickeover. It is there now more than not. In fact putting new plugs in seemed to make it more noticeable. Its also there on acceleration and backfires loads when you get off the power after booting it. Its defo missing. Any ideas?

exhaust leak, will cause a ticking noise, and also allows fresh air in to mix with the unburnt fuel as it comes out of the exhaust port, my VTR1000 used to sound like a gun going off when the manifold leaked at the header and i chopped the throttle closed.

New plugs were the same bog standard plugs, not iridium? My RR-W ran shit on them.

Hard to say without hearing. I'll go with the header/s leaking, especially if its still on the original mild steel pipes.
Blades don't usually run sooty, if anything they are a little weak as standard. Check the air-fiter isn't clogged rotten and then nothing daft in the carb settings.
Next is CCT an then valve clearances.

yea same NGK plugs... Exhaust leak is a good shout, ill and devise a smoke test.

bit of a late reply but this was a corroded manifold gasket... It had welded itself to the cylinder head over winter!
