Along with the other problems i have with my bike today whilst tightening the stud nuts (cylinder onto crankcases) one gave way and snapped the stud half way up Evil or Very Mad I wasnt overly tightening so i put it down to being a weak one the rest had the same amount of pressure with no problems...

In a nutshell what options do i have to repair this without removing the whole cylinder ? Im pretty sure a weld would do it but im clueless. The cylinder is still sitting as it was guessing the other 3 nuts being tight will hold it securely but my question is without the one nut is it going to cause me any issues if i left it as it was? I ran it briefly sounded exactly the same but im hoping a 2stroke fanatic can shed some light on this before the bike ends up in the nearest canal ? Thumbs Up

I'll avoid pointing out that you overtightened it (you did, that's why it snapped) and ask if enough of the stud is left for you to balance a nut on it with the cylinder in place.

If yes, you can weld a nut to it to aid removal.

From your description, you won't be able to, though. There is no alternative apart from stripping the top end.

The only issue is, why were you fucking with the head studs? You state that you'll have to drain coolent so this wasn't part of a top end rebuild.

Why were you tightening the cyl head nuts Shocked

If you run it, the head will warp and be fucked. Head comes off, stud might be easily removed if protruding, everything back together in an hour or two.

Studs not expensive, why ruin another engine?

Buy four new studs and strip the top end. Really, you can dismantle that in 15 minutes how can that be too much trouble?

Studs should not be reused. Did you even use a torque wrench?

The nuts are in such a position a torque wrench cannot be used (so i believe) but yes im aware i overtightened. Il put it down to experience.

Would it really warp the head in such a short running time? Shocked

Theres no stud sticking out from the cylinders hole just my luck it was the shorter front stud of them

It should be possible to remove the top end with engine in frame only thing i might struggle with the engine being in frame is to line up the piston ring grooves, i dont have a stud extractor can the use two nuts on it to lock them together work does anyone know?

It worked on my exhaust studs

Will i get away with just replacing the one stud sickpup?

Havent heard of everyone replacing studs every time theyve done a top end rebuild, it will save me money from buying the studs & extractor tool if i can get away with not using it?

You might be able to tap it round with a small drift, I did something similar with a clutch spring bolt I managed to snap when my Torque wrench broke (it stopped clicking). I should have listened to my gut rather than the torque wrench. Now every time I use my new one I put a bolt in a vice and test it first.

Try to find a raised part of the snapped face of the stud put a drift or small screw driver up against it then GENTLY tap it anti clockwise. Be careful not to damage the thread.

That sounds logical but my question is will it catch onto the stud?

Also if i use the extractor tool/set with my stud snapping around half way down will the tool grip on to it?

Is this what i need ?

Have people actually been looking at the pictures he put up?

There is no way he's gonna be able to weld anything to the stud or tap it out with a punch.

However, it's a 2 stroke, it really isn't much effort to pull the head off and replace the stud.
Don't worry about a stud extractor, just put a couple of nuts on it, or attack it with a pair of vice grips. There should be plenty sticking out to play with.

I tried the two nuts on one of the spare studs i have now they wont come off, even wen put back in because if the nuts come off the studs in secure and wont come out Laughing

So i think a stud extractors the most theoretical option ? I take it they dont damage the stud thread in any way when extracting/putting in?

The extractors dont need a certain amount of bolt being there to fit do they?

The photos definitely do not show that it can't be tapped out, not in my mind anyway.

You have little to lose by trying it.

Those stud extractors are not what you want.

I think what you think you want is something like this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001K9UEG/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0002UJNWE&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0PD2TY5FQXFD8M0RNKAN

However personally I'd rather just smash the hole repeatedly with a punch and fuck it completely you'd save a tenner and get a better outcome.

Try taping it out if it doesn't move with the first few goes take the head off. It'll be far easier and better all round that anything else, with it in situ.

I'm not sure if the OP has consented to taking the head off yet so that might be a bit harsh. If you whip the head off I wouldn't be surprised if you can undo it with you bare fingers. Mole grips certainly would sort it.

I would....if that stud has never been out before, they can stick them in pretty tight at the factory. A decent stud extractor should do it though.

I suspect the reason that Pete says to replace them all is the thinking that if one has bust, the others could follow.

Yes indeed. OP says he didn't over-tighten the nut so it stands to reason that 'someone else' did. If they torqued that one close to failure you should suspect all four have had the same treatment.

BTW going by how much stud is left on the bolt there should be plenty sticking out of the cases to weld on a nut.

With the cylinder on i have bob hope of getting anything inside to tap it round, i could possibly drill into the snapped stud to spin it out but for the sake of taking the barrel off id rather that than loads of metal filings inside my crank area

The extractors you sent a link of on Amazon the easy outs, i have some and they are shite even for the simpliest bolts in my experience of using them

I think i am going to order : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Impact-Stud-Extractor-Removal-1-2-Drive-For-6-13mm-Studs-Bolts/201190374937?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D31103%26meid%3D23c7bd340b494aaca31a82429d1de428%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D360412933231&rt=nc

Having seen a video of using them on a car cylinder it gripped onto the broken stud well and turned straight out with a ratcher

Can they be used to re fit a stud without damaging the thread? Has anyone used one to put a stud in ?

Chris-red i meant as in would the half the stud (approx 1cm) be enough to grip on to it but im going to order one and hope for the best

Corby parts diagram says : STUD,8X28 but i get a reading of 44.79mm of the whole stud (including bit thats inside the case when fitted) and 22.11 approx of the bit that will stick out
