Reccomend me a NAS drive.

I want to add a NAS drive to my home network probably a couple of TB capacity. It won't be used for movie streaming or filesharing, just for backup and storage. I intend to site it in the cupboard alongside my wireless AP.

What I'd LIKE to do is set up folders on the NAS drive that automatically sync with various devices to back up whatever the user thinks is relevant, and of course be able to manually copy over files I want saved.

So what are my options? In my household I have a couple of pc's, three laptops, two ipads, one iphone, several smart-phones and an android tablet. A web-facing share service for my own personal use would be fun too but not essential.

3 main factors to keep in mind

1: Instant out of the box solutions vs on the fly 'projects' to fiddle with and potentially expand

2: Performance, redundancy and scalability

3: Initial outlay vs long term running costs (And often heat/noise)

All told, you can't really go wrong with a Qnap, Asustor or Synology NAS these days, however they primarily offer up convenience, ease of use and low running costs rather than performance or scalability.

Starting with one of the HP Microservers often linked here and building up from that will get you more potential and generally better performance but of course it'll take some fiddling to get it right.

The other option is to go for a retired server off eBay, I recently sold a twin socket server with hardware raid, 8TB of drives and dual redundancy throughout for £200. That blew any sub £1000 NAS into the weeds in most regards but it also brought a massive elephant into the room by the way of a 200w idle power consumption (35w literally switched off ) as well as quite an incredible amount of noise from it's cooling system.

My current personal server brings the idle power usage down to a much more reasonable 100w (0.5 when off), gives me almost enough IO to saturate a 10GBe cable and sufficient CPU grunt for HEVC transcoding. As well as being almost entirely inaudible in it's cupboard. The downside there was the upfront cost with the machine weighing in at a little shy of £2000 thus far (And that was with a £500 saving on the raid controller).

It really is a case of checking the bank balance and picking your poison.

Check some drives in it.

Install OpenMediaVault

Problem solved.

How does that software work Cansa? Do you install it from disc then connect via a network interface?

Second Cansa, tis very good, but if you are not a software / network guru you will need direction and tuition.

Currently running the setup Cansa has suggested with 6TB of drive installed. I somehow borked my web interface but it runs on
