How To: Helmet mount Go Pro

Thought I would do a quick how to guide, for those wanting a bit of advice on how to mount a go pro to their helmet

This is the most secure way I can think of.

You want to use the mount designed for a tripod/monopod and have a suitable bolt.

The bolt I had required a 6mm hole, so grab a decent 6mm HSS bit, and go slow so you don't damage or crack the helmet!

Next, to fit a 3/8 deep socket, I needed a 16mm drill bit to remove some of the polystyrene from the inside, again make sure you go slow and don't damage it when you're removing some material.

Also, before you drill, make sure you remove the liner so you don't tear and ruin it!

Next, get, or cut a bolt to the correct length, and push it through from the inside.

Then fit the mount, with something to hold it. I used some grip tape on the underside to bite into the helmet to help it grip, so I didn't destroy the polystyrene inside by overtightening.

Tested this today, and the mount is extremely stable

Is it a good idea to be drilling a hole in your helmet?

Might be stable but I'd have thought that mount is now quite capable of ripping your helmet into pieces if it gets a heavy impact?

drilling the hole aside.. are you super duper sure you'd want your head exposed a bit of metal like that

this is how i mounted a cam.. not a gopro as it looks ridiculous but i'm positive you could mount it in a similar way.

Go to your local fabric/crafts shop and ask for some strong velcro..yes velcro. The stuff i used was strong enough to support the light structures in the shop.

Get some 3M super sticky double sided tape and the rest should be fairly self explanatory.. but i'l describe it anyway. Double sided tape on the lid with the hard velcro cut into shape and stuck on.. double sided tape onto the mount to you want to use with the soft velcro stuck on..

the part stuck to the lid is bigger for different mounts. I ended up using the slim mount.

*tested at silly speeds without a single worry of it coming off. I can pick up the lid using the camera and swing it around

These cameras look ridiculous btw.

The usefullness or otherwise of helmets notwithstanding, sticking a metal bolt through it pointing directly at the top of your skull is utter madness in my book. It's a nail looking for a hammer.

3m VHB pads will stick any mount you care to name to a helmet. The mount or helmet will fail before the adhesive.

I've also attached a mount using 3M dual-lock which is kind of like heavy duty velcro. I have the same stuff holding a mast foot in my canoe, I can lift the 40kg canoe off the ground by it.

I think the OPs advice is actively dangerous.

Maybe now would be a good time to say that this is an old helmet, that i used for karting and obviously it would be very stupid to actually do this on a motorcycle!

tested the 3m mounts up to 165 and not found them wanting. drilling a bolt into your helmet seems about as smart as drilling through your ECU to fit a numberplate hanger. (Yes really)
