Help please , oil pipe corrosion..

Hi everyone , I am new to this site , hope you do not mind me asking for some advice please.
I bought a Suzuki Bandit 600 , 99 model... I have always really liked the bandits but never got round to owning one till now..

When I went to buy it the other night I thought WOW , it looks fantastic and it had been very well looked after , I checked it all over and just thought its fine so I bought it..

Next day when I was cleaning it and giving it a closer inspection I noticed one of the oil outlet pipes was badly corroded..
The rest of the oil pipes are just fine even the other outlet pipe is fine with no corrosion on..

My question is what can I do about this ? , can it be repaired ? , or do I need to change it which I no is a big job
I will try to put a pic on..

Any advice please and I would be very grateful , PS one more question is it an MOT failure ?.

It's when they start to rust on the inside you need to worry! Shouldn't be a huge job, unless the head needs to be removed.......but you may have problems with rusty exhast studs. You could clean it up and paint with some VHT paint but you'd have to remove it and, if you do that, you may as well replace - they're not expensive.
It's not an MOT failure BTW.

EDIT: Just looked and the head does need to come off to fit new pipes.....sorry, that's gonna cost, you're talking around £300 to £400 for a garage to do them

Hi Vincent , thank you for replying to my post,, I know there only cheap but to replace them I thought I have to split the cylinder head in half ?.
I have not worked on a bandit before so I just don't no.

This may be a silly question but how do you no if there rusty inside with out taking them out first ?..
From the way your post is worded can I replace them with out taking the engine to bits ?.

No...after checking, it looks like you'll need to remove the cylinder head to get the old pipes out...not a great design really Have a look on the Bandit site, there's probably an easier fix that owners use, getting as much of the surface rust off as possible using a wire brush and/or "rust eater" will help prepare it for a coat of paint that will slow the corrosion down a bit.
Rust inside is hard to detect, they shouldn't rust up that easily inside due to the fact that they're coated in oil but I know the pipes on my VFR are prone to rust on the inside so it does happen. Only way I can think of is to remove and have a look. I doubt these pipes rust through completely very often, a tap on the pipe with something solid can give you an idea if they're really bad....a good pipe will ring out while a badly corroded one will make a more wooden sound, hardly scientific tho

Paint them with underseal. Ignore.

Forget about them. Changing them is a big job requires removing the head, which in turn requires removing the exhaust, which will likely mean snapped exhaust bolts and if you're not doing the work or getting it done for free it's going to be expensive.

They may look bad but there are many Bandits out there just the same or worse and they'll probably last a long while yet. Paint them with rust inhibitor or cylinder black if you really must, but really the best thing is to leave them alone.

Hi NKVD , I have ordered some heavy duty brushable underseal.
Should I clean the pipe at all , like with some sand paper or something ?.

Thanks for the top tip chap , I might as well do the other oil pipes at the front as well.

You could try painting with Rust Stopper stuff. Turns the rust to a black/blue oxide.
They would need to be very clean and dry though or that stuff isn't so clever.

Then paint as above using High Temp Black or woteva takes your fancy/floats your canoe.

If you can get the beast to a pressure washer you can jetwash the block after letting some de-greaser soak in for ten fifteen minutes.

Don't aim jet directly at switches, gasket joints, seals and more sensitive bits.
There are those who flame for jetting but I use a pressure washer for all my bikes Zero issues ever. Just use the noggin.

Mask off the stuff that's not meant to be painted.
Then spray the block with silver/aluminimumum HT paint.

It is a wee bit of a project for anyone but cheap-ish, well do-able and after the 'new-ness' calms the-fcuk-down a bit it will look sweeter and you will be full of Proudity.

It is a big job for me , I have stripped my other bikes down in the past , apart from the gearbox's as I have never had any problems with them...

With the exhaust bolts I would weld some allen keys in them and hope they come out
My dad was very good at stripping engines down and rebuilding them so he showed me a lot..

I would not go sanding those pipes. Scrape off the worst of the flaky rust if you like but do it carefully and don't dig the pipes with your scraper or you might hole them.

While a fair bit of rust, I wouldn't want to think about doing those pipes until desperate.

I would go with cleaning them up a bit and painting them, preferably with something that will prevent rust.

They are not pressurised (they are just the oil drains from the head really), beyond normal crankcase pressure.

To replace them means removing the head, which means getting the exhaust off. If you do land up replacing them the seals at the ends are ones that are heavily recommended that you use original Suzuki ones. They are cheap enough, but given if the seals fail you are back doing a top end rebuild it is worthwhile spending the small amount extra

Thanks for all your replies chaps , I am really grateful for all the advice...
It rings out when I tap it with a screwdriver as Vincent says it not so bad when it does that so maybe its not as bad as it looks.
Even though it is a little worrying because I just bought the bike..
The last thing I want to do is take it apart hours after I only just got it .
Other than that the bike is fantastic , I really like it with the streetfighter look.

Oh I thought they was pressurised , my thought was if the pipe springs a leak when I am riding my engine might seize up.

I thought it looked bad myself with all that rust on but you guys say its like a common thing on bandits ,, so I will just clean it up a bit and put underseal on as I have ordered it already..
