but I know most pads have the saftey feature of making the metal to metal contact sound when they wear down to limit but don't know how it work |
This is more of a feature on cars and light vans. The pads have a small metal tang attached to the brake pad backplate and perpendicular to the pad material, sticking out approx 2-3mm past the front side of the brake pad backplate. This tang scrapes the swept surface of the disc when the pad material gets lower than the protruding metal tang, giving advanced warning of impending expense...
I have not come across this on bikes.....usually pad wear is indicated by a groove in the pad material which slowly disappears as the pad wears down.
Sintered pads can sometimes be noisier than organic pads as they contain small bits of soft metal to improve braking friction. ____________________ Current: 2010 Suzuki GSX1340R Hayabusa, 2013 Yamaha YP250R X-Max Sport - Previous: Triumph Sprint ST1050ABS, Honda XL600V Transalp, Honda NT650V Dullsville (don't ask!), Kawasaki ZX9R E1, Honda NX650 Dominator, Suzuki GSX1300RKZ Hayabusa, Honda CBR1000FM, Kawasaki GPZ500S, etc etc |

Could be either.....
Only takes a few minutes to whip the pads out and have a look.
Why not take the pads out, if they still have more than a few mm of pad material on them, clean 'em up with.a bit of coarse emery cloth and refit using some copper/graphite grease on the backplate and abutments at the end of each pad.
If worn low.....replace pads and check caliper pistons and slider pins move freely before reassembly. ____________________ Current: 2010 Suzuki GSX1340R Hayabusa, 2013 Yamaha YP250R X-Max Sport - Previous: Triumph Sprint ST1050ABS, Honda XL600V Transalp, Honda NT650V Dullsville (don't ask!), Kawasaki ZX9R E1, Honda NX650 Dominator, Suzuki GSX1300RKZ Hayabusa, Honda CBR1000FM, Kawasaki GPZ500S, etc etc |

yep what I do over the weekend .
I wanted to get some opinion and maybe get the pads and change any way
after I realised they are £40 a pair hence £80 I am thinking of first taking the pads off and checking
unless someone here has £80 to donate ____________________ SV650 Red

Shop around - £40 sounds like too much!
Change the pads when there is 3mm or less of the friction material remaining, or you run the risk of trashing the discs themselves.
You can usually see how badly the pads have worn, just by looking at them - like you shound be doing once a week. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

There are times when the pistons and seals can be nice and clean and still have a caliper that causes uneven pad wear.
I borrowed this pic but it shows a pin that is quite corroded and can cause all sorts of problems.Quite often if a caliper is allowed to get to this state then the other pin that the caliper sits on will be just as bad.
