I've spotted an SV650 that I might have a look at. Whatever I buy it will be my first big bike as I've just got my license, I'm coming from a YBR 125.

I learnt on an ER6 and wanted to buy something with a similar upright riding position. How would the SV650 compare? It looks more of a sports bike riding position but it's hard to tell.

I know I could wait to look at it but I'm impatient. Razz

If you're talking about the faired SV650S I once had a brief go on one (a 2003 model I think, first of the pointys) and found it very similar to a torture rack, it made my TRX850 feel like an armchair by comparison. Owners seem to cope though and some manage to cover big miles.. Not the guy who owned that particular bike though, he had big trouble with the weight on his wrists after an hour or so.

On the other hand the SV650N looks like a workable tool..

The N has flat bars, IIRC, for a more Bandit-esque position.

You can't go wrong with a Bandit, it'll feel like a rocketship compared to a 125, bits are cheap and plentiful, and they rarely go wrong.

As much as SV650s are hated, by myself included, they make decent starters. I'd probably try to use mine on the road more if it ran.

Unfortunately it also weighs about as much as a rocketship too.

Naked SV650 is reasonably upright and can be made more so playing with different bars etc - but if you've not ridden many bikes you may find a bit of time with a sportier position and you don't mind it.

This one is a SV650S. I guess a test ride is the only way to know for sure.

Not really, unfortunately.
I found the road SV650s quite 'perched' - this was coming from mostly riding a TRX850 on the road, various sports bikes and having a race SV650s.

However after commuting on it for a while, I got used to it.

A good number of years before that, when I first moved on from my 125, bikes felt massively more 'different' when trying others.

It is a sports position, not upright for the faired models, not sure if the 2003+models changed but I doubt it.

Have a test ride and see and see what you think, I do 130 stretches on a 02 sv650s pretty regularly and with few stops its alright. Less comfy than my divvy, but Jesus Christ doing the same trip on the divvy is boring, sv is cheAp fun and a decent first big bike.

I had an unfaired one briefly and did find the seat hard and uncomfortable - to the extent more than a couple of hours on it were best avoided.
Everyone is different and it might suit some.

When he does get here, he'll probably say "forget about the SV650S if you want upright".

Even from just sitting on one, I knew it wasn't for me.

You could look for a yoke and bars from the naked version, but why would you when there are loads of perfectly decent naked bikes out there?

On a slightly unrelated note, I heard an SV650 for the first time yesterday at the Ring of Red (yes laugh you bastards) and it sounded great, much more interesting than my CBR600. Get an SV650N

I've rented SV650(Naked), ER-5 and ER-6. ER-5 felt enough upright and SV650(N) felt little bit racy compared to W650 which has similar position to YBR125. SV650S(faired) had totally different position according to ergo page.
(Foward lean was YBR<W650<ER-5<SV650(N)<ER-6<<<SV650S)
(Both ER-6n and f have same type handle bar)

If you like a flat bassy unchanging tone regardless of revs, sure; I prefer the 'f1' sound of an inline four over a tractor with a broken exhaust Razz.

I've just been informed my hatred of my CBR might be the cam chain tensioner rather than just a poor sounding engine design Laughing

I went to see the SV650S, loved it and bought it. The riding position is fine, it's almost like a hybrid position but felt comfortable. I'll be picking it up later this week. My insurance on the Suzuki is actually cheaper than on the Yamaha, work that one out. Thanks for the advice.

It's because no one steals SV650s. Too homosexual.

Enjoy it, for a starting bike I couldn't really fault it but there are better, I'm sure you'll grow and see it Smile

Still couldn't flat-foot a KTM.

I rode an SV650 for two weeks and hated every minute of it. Horrible riding position, crap suspension and crap brakes too. It was a replacement bike and was glad to get my one back. I'd avoid and get an ER-6. Much better bike IMO.

My wife had an sv650s for a while. I rode it a bit. It was like a 70bhp space-hopper. Never really got the hang of the handling or the riding position. She chucked it in against an FZ6 which is much nicer to ride, albeit silent in comparison.

I had an SV650 with upgraded shock/fork springs/brake pads and thought it was quite good. Peg position hurt my knees worse than my GSXR SRAD though so worth thinking about if you're of a tallish stature (I'm 6ft)

ER-6F being faired, looks like it should be further forward than it is, as tends to happen with bikes that have a naked and faired version. As has been said, both the N&F have the same bars and seating position. It's quite upright and on long journeys has given me coccyx and neck pain. Which also adds more buffeting.

Nearly bought an SV650S before the ER6, but didn't think I'd like the more forward position. In that respect for me I was wrong, is the SV650S better, both have their good and bad parts. It was my first big bike, both would've felt awesome to me, THEN!

Interesting point actually there, on the ride home the other day, after 5 hours in the saddle, I was a-ok, but my friend on his FZ6 was complaining about his backside having gone numb. I didn't think the more upright riding position could be to blame, I'd have expected his to actually be more comfortable than my CBR600F

Fireblade is much comfier. I never thought I'd like that riding position. Some people get on better than bolt upright.
