I will try again.
I got the cylinder barrel from my project bike repaired and overbored and put a head I bought on ebay on there and used the thermostat without checking (forgot to swap with the original on the bike) it worked. I used the same radiator and everything else as before.
Put the coolant back in when rebuilding and bled the system of air and all seemed fine. Ran the bike idle and all seemed fine. Took bike to petrol station this morning and temp was fine, stopped at station and coolant was pouring out of the coolant reserve tank. Started going home and then the temp shot up into the red (engine wasn't under stress). I stopped the bike and waited but it didn't go down fast. Rode the bike home stopping every minute to let the bike cool a little.
Being in a rush to get the bike ready for the MOT in 1 hour I thought that I can't take the bike apart to deal with it, I thought it might just be that the coolant didn't have enough coolant in it (causing it to boil) as it was what I used in the summer which was mostly water.
I thought I will just put concentrate in the reserve tank and drain some out of the drain bolt. I undid the drain bolt and ~50ml came out. I took off the pump cover to try and get more coolant out. None came out so I started the engine and it was only pumping steam however the reserve tank was full. Seeing as my plan to increase the concentration didn't work I was going to have to take the bike apart and delay the MOT for as long as they could (1.5 hours).
I drained the reserve and then flushed the system of coolant before putting in new coolant at 50:50 and bleeding the system of air. Put the bike together and left. All was fine for about a mile until I stopped on a hill at some traffic lights and the temp went to the red.
Why I went on for 3 more miles reflecting now it seems I am a total 'Knob' and not even a shiny steel or marble knob but a rotten wood knob with aids and gamma radiation all over it.
I just couldn't stop, I thought 'maybe the temp sensor is broken', 'I'm sure I put the coolant in properly, tightened all the hoses and bolts, put the rad cap on, bled the system', 'maybe something is blocking a passageway', 'lets make the impeller spin faster and dislodge the block', 'omg this feels so good and sounds awesome', 'I'll pullover next turning', 'omg this feels so good', 'shit I missed the turning', 'hasn't seized yet', 'will stop up ahead to make sure it's all okay', 'I feel it seizing a little, oh well it will be fine in a few minutes'. When I stop I look at the engine and see the nylon from the nylock nuts on the head is completely fucked.
The radiator is cold and the hoses are cold too. |

Nylock nuts on the cylinder head??
Oh and I wouldn't if I were you give up your day job to concentrate on your 2stroke engine building talents either.
The motor will be rubber ducked now, and probably not worth trying to re-build.
Did you even check that the water pump was working after your first overheating issue? it's not unknown for water pump impellors to fall off the drive shaft or the shaft to seize or break, especially when they are sometimes driven by nylon gears etc.
I could be wrong but I bet the big end looks purple and blue and smells very burnt now too. You might be able to save a set of crank cases and maybe the gearbox internals etc if your lucky.
Poor NSR though! |
