all the coolant got sucked out of the radiator and pump and dumped into and out of the reservoir. I think it's the thermastors fault because I'd never used it before.

Anyone translate that to english?

Nylock nuts on the cylinder head?? Shocked

Oh and I wouldn't if I were you give up your day job to concentrate on your 2stroke engine building talents either.

The motor will be rubber ducked now, and probably not worth trying to re-build.

Did you even check that the water pump was working after your first overheating issue? it's not unknown for water pump impellors to fall off the drive shaft or the shaft to seize or break, especially when they are sometimes driven by nylon gears etc.

I could be wrong but I bet the big end looks purple and blue and smells very burnt now too. You might be able to save a set of crank cases and maybe the gearbox internals etc if your lucky.

Poor NSR though! Thumbs Down

I got the cylinder barrel from my project bike repaired and overbored and put a head I bought on ebay on there and used the thermostat without checking (forgot to swap with the original on the bike) it worked.

The NSR uses a plated bore and cannot be rebored.

All the best

Could it be the head gasket has failed?

Got the plating removed, bored, welded, plated then honed, then I melted it Wink

FTFY

Anyway, it won't be the thermostat - whether it works or not it wouldn't cause the symptoms you describe.

Also, you could run the thing with pure water in (just like a racebike innit) - 'coolant' is antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor - it does nothing whatsoever to raise the boiling point. What does raise the boiling point is increasing the pressure.

You left air in the system.

Then, you took out the remaining coolant/water and left air in the system again.

Yep, antifreeze makes the water a marginally worse as a coolant.

All the best

Also, just re-read some of this...

You said you bled the system correctly, but later went on to attempt to fill it by pouring the coolant into the reservoir?

Is that how you initially filled it? If so, you need a better manual.

It's all a bit academic now anyway - if you had treated it well after the very first overheat you might've got away with it (if it weren't for those snooping kids) but to rag the arse off it after overheating it multiple times, well, it's fucked.

It might still run, if the rings aren't too melted to the bore, but it'll not be 'right' without another rebuild.
