 |
|
The downstairs cludgie in my house has been subject to a shonky installation.
The waste pipe goes from the U-bend straight down through the floor and into the sewer.
Not normally a problem until there is a lot of water in the sewer (like with recent rain) and the water level covers the end of the waste pipe.
If this happens, it forms an airlock in the waste pipe and the water can't get away. The toilet can actually start to backfill. I have to put a bit of hosepipe down round the u-bend to let the air in and the waste can get away.
Anyone know of some sort of valve I could fit to let air into the system but not let foulage out?
The trouble is, there is no conventional "vertical" waste pipe. It comes out of the back of the bog then does a 90 degree turn down into the floor then underground about 4 feet to the sewer. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. A manual valve might in fact be enough. It's just finding a way to fit one.
Even a simple 1/4 turn gate valve in the top of the waste pipe would porobably do it.
Mind you. I'd need to put my fish fingers into a tupperware before opening it, just in case. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

McAlpine make a straight and an angled pan connector with a 32mm connection for a basin which you could fit a small air admittance valve to if you can easily replace the pan connector. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

Physically move the toilet forward to allow you to fit something between the Ubend and the elbow if you have the room, or possibly have to drill and bond into the top part of the pipe at the elbow.
Why have I never thought of toilet physics before
Change of toilet perhaps? Is there something available that suits your circumstance? ____________________ Honda Varadero >> Triumph Speed Four >> Honda CBR1100xx |

under the floorboards, remove a section of pipe fit a soil branch pipe that goes out the wall
go for around 110 - 120 degree around £20 from plumbers merchant.
Had to do exactly the same in our old house which was also plumbed in by a herp derp

do you have a bath and sink in the toilet?
if so are they all linked to the same pipes? if so youve got a greater choice of where to put the vent.
where i am at the moment i have toilet, bath and sink in same room but the bath and sink go to a pathetic 76mm drainage pipe and toilet goes straight down to the sewer.
Other option is to get a 90 degree pan connector with a built in vent hose and just run that straight up inside the house through the ceiling and out the roof.
easier less pretty

Thanks for taking the time to do that.
I'm not seeing a good option that doesn't involve diggging up the patio unfortunately. It was dug up when a new water pipe was put in and I saw where the main pipe was but didn't know this was a problem at the time.
What I might be able to do is use a connector like the one you linked to then take a smaller diameter vent pipe out through the wall and up to gutter level. Still means drilling through the wall mind but I need to get a guy in with a core drill soon anyway so drilling two holes won't be much more expensive than drilling one.
Luckily all the real fuckwittery like that in this house is confined to a relatively small extension built by the same guy. You should have seen his combi boiler install!
