PostPosted: 18:06 - 08 Jan 2016    Post subject: Toilet plumbing question Reply with quote

The downstairs cludgie in my house has been subject to a shonky installation.

The waste pipe goes from the U-bend straight down through the floor and into the sewer.

Not normally a problem until there is a lot of water in the sewer (like with recent rain) and the water level covers the end of the waste pipe.

If this happens, it forms an airlock in the waste pipe and the water can't get away. The toilet can actually start to backfill. I have to put a bit of hosepipe down round the u-bend to let the air in and the waste can get away.

Anyone know of some sort of valve I could fit to let air into the system but not let foulage out?

The trouble is, there is no conventional "vertical" waste pipe. It comes out of the back of the bog then does a 90 degree turn down into the floor then underground about 4 feet to the sewer.

I think I get what you are asking, could you not put a one way valve directly into the U bend at the top? Or maybe even a vertical pipe from the top of the U bend onto an auto or mech valve so it is higher then the 'deposit'. If it doesn't happen often just use a manual ball valve?

Any vent into the house will negate the point of a u bend.

Do you have an outside wall nearby? Take a pipe directly up from the u bend and then outside, for bonus points have it exiting into another (not air tight) drain.

Ideally you need an open stench pipe exiting from your roof but this may not be practical due to economic restraints so my solutions are.... Poo in a bucket until water levels fall and you can just flush the lot away however if the rain persists you may have to put the buckets of poo in your freezer until water levels drop and then put your "poo lollies" down the toilet and let them warm up ( this is known as the thaw and flush method). Poo in your garden and blame next doors cat. Poo in next door's garden and deny owning a cat ( I think this logic may be flawed).

A manual valve might in fact be enough. It's just finding a way to fit one.

Even a simple 1/4 turn gate valve in the top of the waste pipe would porobably do it.

Mind you. I'd need to put my fish fingers into a tupperware before opening it, just in case.

you should have a stack coming out the roof, i dont see why youd have any problem fitting one.

McAlpine make a straight and an angled pan connector with a 32mm connection for a basin which you could fit a small air admittance valve to if you can easily replace the pan connector.

I SHOULD have a vented stench pipe coming up to roof level. If I did, this thread wouldn't exist.

I'd have to dig up the concrete patio and mains sewer to get at the waste pipe to fit one. It goes straight down into the floor inside the house and continues underground to the sewer. It was installed by a retard.

You say you have a downstairs dunny, which therefore causes me to assume you also have an upstairs one?

If the upstairs one isn't giving you any problems (and nothing in your OP gives rise to believe so) - then why not just use that one*, and avoid using the downstairs head till the rains have stopped/floods have dispersed?

*One presumes, of course, if it's an ensuite, that you are beyond that coy newlywed stage of not making any kind of bottom-noises whilst the other half is within earshot.

What! There's a stage beyond that?

Mrs Bastard wanders in and take a shit whilst I'm having a shower.

I just wish she would use the toilet, though.

Should still give you SOME room for maneuver?

A friend's rented ground floor flat we discovered had similar, but with a toilet that exited straight down.

Had to do the hose thing a few times to sort out the water level.

Physically move the toilet forward to allow you to fit something between the Ubend and the elbow if you have the room, or possibly have to drill and bond into the top part of the pipe at the elbow.
Why have I never thought of toilet physics before Laughing

Change of toilet perhaps? Is there something available that suits your circumstance?

under the floorboards, remove a section of pipe fit a soil branch pipe that goes out the wall

go for around 110 - 120 degree around £20 from plumbers merchant.

Had to do exactly the same in our old house which was also plumbed in by a herp derp

https://i.imgur.com/7j5kfXY.png

do you have a bath and sink in the toilet?

if so are they all linked to the same pipes? if so youve got a greater choice of where to put the vent.

where i am at the moment i have toilet, bath and sink in same room but the bath and sink go to a pathetic 76mm drainage pipe and toilet goes straight down to the sewer.

Other option is to get a 90 degree pan connector with a built in vent hose and just run that straight up inside the house through the ceiling and out the roof.
easier less pretty

Thanks for taking the time to do that.

I'm not seeing a good option that doesn't involve diggging up the patio unfortunately. It was dug up when a new water pipe was put in and I saw where the main pipe was but didn't know this was a problem at the time.

What I might be able to do is use a connector like the one you linked to then take a smaller diameter vent pipe out through the wall and up to gutter level. Still means drilling through the wall mind but I need to get a guy in with a core drill soon anyway so drilling two holes won't be much more expensive than drilling one.

Luckily all the real fuckwittery like that in this house is confined to a relatively small extension built by the same guy. You should have seen his combi boiler install!

I was thinking of something like this - get smaller pipe (probably get away with quite small, providing it's not in a position to get 'blocked', so could also be reduced before going through the wall maybe) and attach to the top of your current pipe coming out of the back of the toilet (lots of silicone, probably).

Ive never understood how people can think its fine to jut bang in a shit pipe from a toilet without putting in a vent, you could get away with a pretty small pipe for the vent as long as its got a hood on the top and meshed itll be fine.

cut hole in U bend

insert hose pipe
silicone
drill wall
push through wall.

Bodge bodged.
