 |
|
I'm having a shed installed for the bikes soon. Size is 10' x 8', to hold both bikes but with room to work on one if the other is pushed outside (hopefully - I don't really have room for anything bigger). It will be on a concrete base, and I want to have ground anchors installed. I was thinking maybe something that won't protrude above floor level, just to make things a bit easier? Anything about that fits this description? Or if not, what ground anchor set-up can you recommend? I was just going to ask this
By concrete base do you mean the shed will be mounted on a concrete base but have a standard flimsy wooden floor? Or there will be no floor and just the concrete base?
Not sure how it would work if you have a wooden floor without cutting a hole in it? ____________________ DRZ400-SM

The shed will have a wooden floor. The folks who are installing it are also doing the concrete base, and will install the anchor(s) when laying the base, cutting the floor to accommodate the anchors. I need to decide on and get the anchors myself before the installation date (end of Feb.). I'd probably best contact them with my anchor choice to make sure they can incorporate whatever I choose before ordering.
Can someone tell me what is the full width of a 19mm Almax chain please? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

By definition it would need to be more than 3x the 19mm metal gauge (probably nearer 4x) which is more than 57mm which is more than the 50mm a standard Yanchor can accommodate. |
This is what I was thinking, so I may not be able to go with a flush fit anchor after all. So, any other anchor recommendations that will do the job? Should I go for two anchors, or use one chain to secure both bikes (as the main security - will also use disc locks etc)? I see lots of anchors available, just wondered if anyone could suggest any particularly good ones, any general thoughts and ideas of the best way to go. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

How thick is that concrete base going to be?
Go with something like the above idea "jnw010 suggested", but maybe sink it in a large bucket full of concrete with it in and then have the concrete base over the top.
Although to be honest the best security should be going to be based around your door to stop easy entry. Once inside they will be out of sight and can spend time to defeat chains. |
The thickness of the concrete base is something else I wondered about. I guess I need to discuss this some more with the installers, see what they are willing/able to do.
The security on the shed itself is something else I need to think about, but it is only a wood structure so my options are limited. I can only do so much to protect the bikes. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I'd be very surprised if they go beyond 4" base + hardcore below. I wouldn't be surprised if it was less.
For a shed, I don't suppose they'll be putting in any DPM, with a timber floor above with ventilation between the concrete and the floor it won't be necessary, and it's just a shed. On the other hand a DPM sheet is what, £8?, and bringing it up to tie into the shed structure isn't that big a deal. Definitely overspec for a shed though (I always seem to go a bit over the top on simple structures).
My suggestion for the sunken anchor would need a deeper hole dug in that one spot, and if was me, taking that route, I would do that first. Dig the hole, bit of hardcore then some gravel at the bottom, then knock up a bit of form work around the top to get the levels right to where the shed base will ultimately be. Mix up in a 'barrow and create your sunken anchor.
They can do the rest of the shed base after, working to the level of the anchor.
It would probably be easier to get an above surface anchor and just create a concrete recess for it to sit in. Effectively dig the same hole as before, and make your formwork up to below the final shed base level. Then when it's gone off gaffa tape something the right thickness on top of your little block of concrete (polystyrene foam for example) and they then do the rest of the concrete base to the level of the top of your foam. Once it's all set, you pull the foam out (break it up if necessary) and voila, a recessed anchor, that you can cover over to have a flat surface if you want.
I can measure my almax and report back later in the week, but they are big feckers.
Edit: Pictures above, I won't bother measuring! |

A possibility. I'll see what the people installing the base and shed say first. They said they could fit ground anchors, but we didn't discuss it in any detail. They talked about doing the base, then me deciding where the anchors would go before erecting the shed, so they must have been thinking bolt-down jobs.
I don't have much in the way of DIY skills, and am certainly no welder, so it's whatever they can do, or me after the fact, although I could possibly prepare something like jnw's suggestion. And I don't know anyone up here who does welding or owt else. Well, I just don't know anyone up here
whitedevil, cheers for the pics ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I don't have the confidence to build a 10'x8' shed myself with a dodgy arm and shoulder. Yep, will be weatherproofing it - any suggestions as to the best stuff? It comes with a base coat, was thinking of having a mosey around B&Q for something suitable. I'll ask them about the roof felt (storm Des tore off some from the small shed that's currently in place). ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

That's partly what I'm thinking (steel toecaps only, in the shed? ). But also, with limited space, I thought it'd be easier to move the bikes and work around them. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
