Why hasn't my window fallen out yet? - house renovation stuf

Got an internal window that's in a wooden frame with window putty which I've removed,

I've also cut off the nails holding the glass in place other than the ones at the bottom that I've cut short due to not being able to get the dremel in

The window is showing no signs of budging, it can't just be the stumps of these two nails at the bottom holding it, surely?

The window frame does have a lot of gloss paint on it

I've tried giving the window a bit of a tap from the other side, but I don't want to break it due to a 2 year old running around the place

Any ideas why it's not shifting?

Could be in a groove on three or all sides.
Can you tap the surround apart at all?
There may be no easy way other than tape over it both sides and break it out.

I've got round the top and the sides having scraped most of the putty out, it appears to be a loose fit in the frame held by the pins - except all but the bottom two pins are gone

The 'L sections' are probably points which can be removed with a flat head screwdriver.

I still think you should just lock your daughter up and put a wrecking bar through it then sweep and hoover up the mess.

Possibly the stumps of the pins. They're tapped in at an angle and a pair of needle nose pliers get them out with a bit of twisting.
Also worth using an old stanley knife blade to break the paint.

Depending on when they were fitted, (we had a lot of broken windows when I was younger), they used to put putty round the frame before putting the glass in, cut the pane to size push it in to place then put a few pins in to secure it, then put the putty over the pins to make it look neater (I guess).

Depending on how long the glass has been in place, it might just need some gentle persuasion (a bit of force in 1 corner moving along the top with your fingertips to the other corner and round the edge of the glass), failing that, and still believing it's possibly ancient putty that has done its job for many years, get a thin sharp blade and run it round between the glass and window frame.

Buy a 2" wide roll of sellotape. Tape the window both sides and bosh it through.

Cover glass on both sides with cling film and then break, less bits to clean up. .

Gloss paint can have a surprising amount of grab. On external window frames it's the gloss that weather seals the panes in place.

If you're not striping the paint, then "tape & break" is probably the most efficient solution.

Is it a double glazed unit? Could be hung-up on something between the two panes. You'd normally want to lift it slightly with a plastic wedge between the bottom of the pane and the frame then slide it out bottom first over the top of the wedge.

Buy a suction cup too. They are super cheap. Sold as "dent pullers". If nothng else, it makes handling and fitting the new pane much easier.

It'll have a bead of putty behind it - that's most likely to be holding it but do remove any remnants of nails as well.

If you're based near London I have some very decent glass suckers I can lend for a weekend.

If I was in a stick and needed it out quick I'd probably try a toilet plunger just to give a little pull (I'm in a flat so a push from outside isn't an option for me) before I resorted to breaking the glass. Even with it taped you'll have the odd chip here and there from the outter edges of the pane, I can see why you'd want to avoid it with the toddler.

Sorry for lack of update, didn't get home until 11 last night and the toilet broke this morning so will probably be fixing that tonight.

I can get to both sides of the window as it's above a doorway between dining room and conservetory - it's always been an internal window as far as I can tell.

As far as I can see the window has been placed into position (it's frosted so not sure if a plunger / gripper will help) nails put in and then putty, no bed of putty first

It's possible the lower two nails are still holding with help from the paint on the back.

My next plan of action is to use a cold chissel as a drift to hammer the nails in, I'll then put some plywood over the side that faces into the dining room and try to scrape the paint from between glass and frame and push out.

If it breaks then the plywood should stop any shards going into the dining room
