I'll be swapping my bike this spring and that'll mean either trading in or selling my existing bike.

The thing is I crashed it a couple of years ago (when it was 6 months old), I paid for the repair and it wasn't 'recorded', the repair included having the frame 'jigged', a dent in the tank was filled and all other damaged parts were replaced with brand new genuine items.

I guess I'll get less for the bike if I'm honest about the crash, I'm reluctant to lie about it as I wouldn't like it to happen to me.

I've never experienced any problems since the repair and it looks perfect.

What would you do? What does the law say.

Dont ask a lot less for your bike.

As long as its been prefessionally repaired and you have receitps itll be fine.

I wouldn't say nothing unless asked... and even then I'd under-describe the accident.. As long as the bike is 100% safe to ride and in as-described condition then there's no problem really.

Nah the r6 was different, I told him about the accident as I never repaired the damage - I don't think I'd get away with saying it'd never been crashed Whistle Laughing

Whereas the ZXR400 was mint when I sold it (cosmetically anyway!) despite having been crashed into a brick wall... I replaced all plastics/screen/tank/seats/various other bits just for sake of it.. all I damaged was the front fairing Laughing But couldn't turn down a full bodykit + tank + screen + haedlight + indicators in mint condition for only £150 Very Happy

Frame jigged! Take it the frame wasn't out by much?

My mate had his frame jigged twice (3rd crashed snapped it tho!) The first time it was jigged it was out by a far whack!

I wouldn't say unless specifically asked. Then, if I were asked, the answer would be dependant on whether I was the owner from new - if yes, then I'd admit to some (but play it down), if not then the answer would be "not to my knowledge".

I'll be the boring bugger (as usual) with the legal standpoint...

As a seller you don't have to mention that the bike has been involved in any accident damage unless specifically asked by the prospective purchaser. Obviously the bike has to be roadworthy unless you're selling it as a 'spare and/or repair' vehicle but you can be (fairly) economical with the truth when it comes to the bikes history.

Personally I'd advertise it as normal however, if you lie when asked a direct question regarding the crash history of the vehicle you could face a civil claim for remuneration should it be proved that you told a porky to gain a sale at a later date.

Last bike I bought the previous owner was up front about it falling over (he didn't mention at what speed though Smile ). The repair is very good, had to look really close. You can only tell on the rear of the panels, have to be careful when removing them.

Anyhow, guess that made me look over the bike really carefully. As the guy had been up front and was reasonable about the price I ended up striking a deal Very Happy

If I'd have found the damage myself I'd have probably walked away.

It all depends on how forward you are. I am very non-confrontational, but the power of money can always subside that if need be.

I wouldn't say anything unless it is quite obvious to them. But if they ask, let them know you had a small accident, and the work done was completed by a skilled mechanic.

Jaffa,

I suggest that you do not lie, just don't say its been crashed unless asked. The thing is, if you sell something misdescribed, even as a private seller then you could be held responsible.

Just don't mention it unless directly asked is my opinion.

Its quite sad to think that we are such a tight unit of people (nods and helping each other) but when it comes to money there are still more than a few who would happily let someone else pick up the tab for their mistakes.

I say this only because a good friend of mine (allimc) has now had 2 bikes with expensive problems. Sure you could say its her fault for not being careful enough, but you can't spot everything.

My brother bought a TL1000 6mths ago and recently found that the frame has a large rather nasty crack near the rear shock. It has also been repaired once. Not nice when you pay top dollar.

I myself am willing to take the hit for my own mistakes, if I broke it then someone else won't pay. That said, if it was fixed professionally and the price set to match, then I wouldn't walk away as a buyer (unless I found it without being told).

It just seems that its always the nice people who get ripped off.

Jaffa I don't think you would get much less for it though.
