It's so slow and laggy recently, about two weeks ago it was doing the same thing so I CCleanered it, defrag, changed anti virus, full scan etc.
Worked fine for a week or so and now its back and really slow.
What can I do? See attached picture...

Turn off windows update, stop anti-virus, turn off indexing and scheduled tasks. Could get an SSD too because the speeds on your hard drive seem very slow.
Actually you just need more RAM or less windows I'm using 2.8gb at the moment. |

Download a Linux Live .iso file, burn to DVD (or CD if machine is ancient)
Boot as Linux from the cd, this won't install anything. Try doing some stuff that lags under Windows.
If it's still laggy then it's a hardware problem. If not it's decision time, either bung more of what Windows guzzles into the crate, or consider a change to Linux.
Linux Mint is probably the best choice for this exercise, especially if you're not familiar with Linux. ____________________ They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa, hey-hey,

| J.M. wrote: | What do you actually need Windows for? If there is nothing specific, I wouldn't bother. | Agreed, unless you're using it for gaming or something only available on Windows then at least take a look at Linux. Linux is way way more efficient in resource usage than Windows and has the added advantage that any application you could possibly want is available for free.
An easy way to try Linux without committing yourself is to install VirtualBox, then download a Linux .iso image and install it into VirtualBox. You can then run Linux as if it was the 'real' operating system. Nothing changes in reality and your machine will still boot as a Windows box. Obviously performance won't be great since it's running on top of an iffy Windows setup, but at least you get a feel for Linux, and can ditch it if you don't like it.
Sample resource usage, currently I'm running, Firefox, Evolution (email) and a Libreoffice spreadsheet, total memory usage is 1.5Gb, zero swap file about 5% CPU. ____________________ They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa, hey-hey,

I think that given his current memory situation, a virtual machine could perform really badly. Instead, in this specific case, I'd recommend a persistent live USB. Very easy to create and the full system's resources will be available to test with.
If the HDD is a decent size, OP could even just go straight to dual-booting. A distribution like Ubuntu makes a dual-boot setup very easy to get running. I imagine others may do too, but I don't have experience with many distros. |
Quite right, silly me. Obviously OP can boot a Linux Live system from a USB. I wouldn't dive headlong into dual boots though. Try a few Linux distros first, OP may not like Ubuntu, or any of the alternatives for that matter. ____________________ They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa, hey-hey,

I actually have 4gb of RAM, not entirely sure why it was saying 90 odd percent was being used.
I removed AVAST anti virus and a load of other programmes and it seems to be working fine now. Just using windows defender
Sorry I didn't see all the replies, thank you all for your help.
Going to upgrade soon anyway. ____________________ Malaguti F12 Phantom-Dead, Suzuki AY50- Dead, NRG power DD LQ, CBR125.
