Why is my laptop so F**ked?

It's so slow and laggy recently, about two weeks ago it was doing the same thing so I CCleanered it, defrag, changed anti virus, full scan etc.

Worked fine for a week or so and now its back and really slow.

What can I do? See attached picture...

Turn off windows update, stop anti-virus, turn off indexing and scheduled tasks. Could get an SSD too because the speeds on your hard drive seem very slow.

Actually you just need more RAM or less windows I'm using 2.8gb at the moment.

Download a Linux Live .iso file, burn to DVD (or CD if machine is ancient)
Boot as Linux from the cd, this won't install anything. Try doing some stuff that lags under Windows.

If it's still laggy then it's a hardware problem. If not it's decision time, either bung more of what Windows guzzles into the crate, or consider a change to Linux.

Linux Mint is probably the best choice for this exercise, especially if you're not familiar with Linux.

Check drivers are up to date, could be a memory leak caused by out of date drivers (if it ain't a hardware issue).

My killer network driver does this shit sometimes when its out of date and half my ram is suddenly unable to cache properly.

Quick and easy way to do this is with Driver Booster 3. I got a free premium key if you want it.

Its the 100% disk usage that is killing it.
you need to find out what is causing that and deal with it.

You're right on the minimum RAM for the newer windows.
Try disabling Aero and see what that does.

you could use a usb stick for extra ram (readyboost) as windows calls it, doubt it would speed up your computer that much but I used to leave a 4gb stick in the back of a shit computer. Actually my college usb is tiny, you wouldn't notice it in a laptop.

If using a USB as extra RAM actually helps anything there are more serious problems at bay. USB access speeds are hideous in comparison to RAM.

What do you actually need Windows for? If there is nothing specific, I wouldn't bother.

2gb of RAM is no longer enough. 4gb is the minimum acceptible amount for an old computer with windows 7 imo.

If you can, try and upgrade to 8gb of ram. Download speccy and use that to find out what the correct type of ram it is, and find some on ebay.

I also advise opening up the laptop, just to make sure, as speccy reports 2 extra slots for my laptop, than there actually is.

I agree 2B of RAM isn't enough, but I am also wondering how old the hard drive is, it might be wearing out. Even a low-budget SSD drive should help with start-up times compared to a mechanical disk drive.

I actually have 4gb of RAM, not entirely sure why it was saying 90 odd percent was being used.

I removed AVAST anti virus and a load of other programmes and it seems to be working fine now. Just using windows defender

Going to upgrade soon anyway.
