Hi guys

Trying to fit a new collector box on my 1989 VFR750 (RC24). Previously it had the Motad 2 into 1 silencer fitted straight onto the downpipes

I've bought from david silver spares the gaskets they carry for that part number which is a repro item I believe. They're the graphite kind. Problem is, the collector box won't fit with the gaskets on - they just get torn up. I tried gasket on the pipe then fitting the box, and gasket in the box to fit on the pipe and both ways they get shredded. I've gone through 4 of them now (2 sets) and can't get it fitted on

Is there anything else I can use to seal these up, or some kind of trick to it ?

Many thanks Thumbs Up

Silicon Sealant.

Copper silicone sealant. Loctite 5990. Used without issues on an almost identical bike.

I had issues with it smoking up - However, that was nearer the cylinder head where it's a lot hotter.

Go to your local auto parts shop and buy proper exhaust sealant, they sell it even in small tubes and it costs next to nothing. I 100% guarantee it will work and the exhaust won't leak, ever.

Or just waste your time and money experimenting with silicone.

Except the last exhaust I fitted specified silicon sealant between the downpipes and the end can...

I use this with great success. I wouldn't use it between the head and headers though, there should not be any sealants.

It's Gungum. It cracks and falls out, it's not waterproof.

Well, I don't know about that. Thinking

EDIT: Thinking of it, I used it on the MZ several years ago and the exhaust still doesn't leak. I also used it on several cars and those are driven in rain and salt as well and are alright. I smear it on the mating surfaces and put the exhaust together and I'm done with it.

EDIT: That however might be confusing to some.

Regarding common or garden silicone sealant, it works very well.
I used it to seal the joints on my DRZ400, it worked fine, especially when you consider how hot the down pipe gets on that bike!

I'll use silicon over gum gun anyday
Gun gum's ok for wood burning stoves Laughing

If you have to apply it thickly and want it to set fast thoughout
not just have a skin develop with snot beneath,
mix in some cornflour and trowel it in.
S'wat I do when making boots & grommets
