Today I changed the oil of my XBR. I filled the oil tank up, started the engine, after that I checked the oil level and it was alright. Then I had a ride and now the oil is slightly, perhaps a millimeter, above the max notch on the dipstick. Do I bother sucking that extra excess out or just leave it to be burned away?

While overfilling can cause issues, that's not a problematic level, that's well within margins of error. Silicone tubing dunked in to the filler hole, a finger over then end, remove tubing into receptacle, remove finger, repeat, works well, if slowly, and avoids dumping the lot out. I used 6mm aquarium airline, as that's what I had kicking about. Adding a blunt/mixing syringe to that would greatly speed up the process.

For instance, a YBR125 does not like being overfilled. Changed oil out after buying it and instead of ~1L, it was almost 2. All gearbox clunkiness (other than being a YBR) went away with that. Once I overfilled it by about 100ml, and the clunkiness partially came back.

I sold a bike to a neighbour and he topped the oil up with about five litres because he thought it was supposed to be up to the filler cap.
Then it wouldn't turn over ...
No harm done when drained back to normal.

I only ask as now I can hear sort of a hissing sound from the left hand side part of the engine when under load. Thinking

I'm not sure if the sound was there before though and there's no hiss when in neutral. Could be the gearbox, but could as well be nothing.

is that the clutch basket side? Most likely that if it disappears when the clutch is pulled in.

Nope, it's the stator and starter clutch assembly side. I recently changed the stator, but as said, if it was that it would grind/hiss in neutral as well.

Useless nuggets of information....

No 1. - BMC B series diesel engines must not be filled above the max line as they have a tendency to blow the crank shaft oil seal if overfilled.

No 2. - BMC B series diesel engines were supplied with dipsticks with no marks on because when used in marine and industrial applications the engines might be mounted on the slant. You were meant to pop mark the dipstick with a centre punch to allow for your mounting arrangement. Work that one out!
