My 929s fork pinch bolts are looking worse for wear and quite heavily corroded, thinking about replacing them and see Pro bolt want £20 for four stainless bolts.

£20 for four bolts seems a bit excessive so looked on fleabay and noticed a company selling four stainless steel bolts for the 929 comes in at £5.50.

The grade of stainless used is a little different to Pro bolt in that their (probolt) bolts are more resistant to corrosion but other than that very similar properties.

Probably over thinking this but would buying the £5 set be a dumb idea? Don't want to put myself or anyone's safety in danger for the sake of £15 ...

I buy a lot of fasteners & I'm VERY careful who I buy from.

If you want cheap then these folk on eBay sell reasonable quality :

As you suspect, not all fasteners are created equally & it's not just down to what from or how they made.

How much are OE bolts from Honda?
And why stainless? Stainless is brittle, and usulally harder than high-speed tool steel.. ie normal drill bits that blunty rather than cut it; hence where you have a steel bolt in an aluminium hole.. like an engine casing, or a fork yoke... if you come to have to get bolt out by brute.. its a royal PITA, and oft makes more hasle than it would ever save.. all for the sake of a little coppa-slip and some solvol...
Mild bolts work... add coppa-slip or loctite as needed, vasaline or grease and occasional preventative maintenence and job-jobbed....
I would use mild-steel bolts and compare price with OE.

Speedy Fasteners. https://www.speedyfasteners.com/default.asp

They also have an ebay shop. Got my entire fairing kit of stainless Dzus 1/4 turn fasteners and clips on there for the Viffer at a decent price.

This +1!

Ive replaced alot of fasteners on my KMX with generic stainless steel just to get rid of some of the furred up OEM plated stuff. But it's a fair bit heavier than OEM bits.

I think that all the pro bolt engine bolts might help even things out though, as they are beautifully light and parred down to the minimum weight possible.

Should probably have a grade 8,8 mild steel bolt in that application. If you want them shiny, get bright zinc plated ones (bzp) . Be about £1.99 delivered off eBay.

Any time a bolt feels funny winding it out I swap it out for titanium unless it's something where tension is specifically important like fork legs or wheel bolts, then I go for stainless from a local machine shop.

You know steel bolts are, generally speaking, stronger than both titanium and stainless?

I always use steel unless it's something non-load bearing or had an exotic fastener material in there in the first place.

Steel is stronger, cheaper and more durable.

Stainless looks cleaner.

Titanium is lighter.
