I literally just dragged my VFR out which hasn't been ridden since October last year.
I charged the battery and pumped up the tyres and did all the usual pre-ride checks. Took about 30 seconds to pick up and fire and about a minute to be idling properly on all 4 pots. Off on a run up North for the weekend. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Go to a petrol station and fill the tank up, it's no more complicated than that. |

Interesting thread, confirms most of my experiences..
So, no ill effects form the dreaded ethanol and no need for 'Stabil' (whatever the fuck that snake oil is)..
PS I also hate battery tenders.. (disconnect the earth on storage and recharge if necessary the day before intended use) ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

it does depend on the bike. Petrol is a blend, not a single uniform liquid, and some of it's components are very volatile. That means they evaporate continually at room temperature. Higher temperatures increase the probability of any given molecule joining the vapour. Having the fuel sealed decreases the probability of the volatile components from escaping.
With Ethanol in fuels now, if you let the volatile components go, you're left with a sort of gooey varnish stuff that isn't nice. So yeah in some situations leaving fuel in a bike without running it for years is OK, and some it's bad. It's not a definitive thing, but it's wise to take precautions.
I have no idea how fuel stabiliser actually works, but it is recommended by fuel companies (who don't make it themselves I don't think). It could all be lies, but I doubt it. I don't think it's snake oil, certainly it's less snake oil like than something like Redex. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |

I used to be on another bike forum, and it was the same every year. Winter comes along and people put their bikes away shouting "I don't bother with stabiliser, battery chargers" etc etc, and in the spring they're the same ones bitching that their bike won't start cos the carbs/injectors are gummed up and the batteries are fubar'd. |
Hey mister, what's an injector?
To be fair I've had gummed up carbs but only after several years of leaving the bike with fuel bowls full. I now drain the bowls before a lay up. Batteries are disconnected and left then recharged. Really 6 months is not long enough (as this thread seems to confirm) to damage the fuels system. I expect the 'bitchers' have other issues.. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750
