Posted: 20:04 - 23 Jan 2021 Post subject: Mechanic started my Bike while draining engine oil!!!!! |
 |
|
Hi guys I'm new here, I've been riding for almost 5 years, I have anxiety and OCD, my bike is a Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500X, recently I went for an oil change and during the oil change when the oil was draining half way, I told my mechanic to adjust the throttle cable and make it softer, he immediately turned the ignition On and started the bike, I panicked and I immediately turned off the engine 5 seconds later, I've been told to never start a vehicle without engine oil and my mechanic started it for 5 seconds, I'm really worried that my bike might be damaged because he started the bike without engine oil, he told me that it was actually okay because some engine oil was stuck on top of the engine because he was draining it and it came out half, it was still draining and half of the engine oil had already dropped on the pan below but some oil was still in the sump, since I have OCD I assume that my bike might be slightly damaged, is my bike damaged? He started the bike while draining the engine oil half way and the bike was running for 5 seconds till I shut it off, I'm really worried guys! Help me.

Engine will be fine, they are hardly highly stressed, especially at no load for a short time, dont worry ____________________ Yamaha RD50M, Honda C90, Yamaha RS100, Yamaha RD125LC, Honda XL125 V9 Varadero, Honda NT700VA, Honda VFR800X, Honda CRF1000L, Honda ST1300 Pan European |

Suffers from anxiety... buys a motorbike
Well, don't ever buy a 2-stroke! They don't even have an oil system as such* and you just keep your fingers crossed enough enters the system mixed in with the petrol.
The good news is you could drain all the oil and there'll be still enough lurking in there on the surfaces to make little odds to all but the most highly strung engines. For example, in my user manual it says I need 2.3L for an oil change or 2.6L if I also change the oil filter cartridge. And yet the manufacturer states it has a total oil capacity of 2.7L... huh?
Yes, there's 100ml stuck in there somewhere. You'll never get it out unless you strip the engine and clean all the components or run it till it gets hot, 5 seconds isn't it by a long chalk. I'd say between the lurking oil, the filter and the "half drained" you mention there was probably another litre still in there.
Here's the other thing: what's the oil for? Seriously. If it were just for lubrication the humble 2-stroke ekes out a life of mere millilitres and does okay so what's up with the litres of oil in a 4-stroke?! Okay so unless you have a pre-unit Enfield half of it will keep the gearbox from shredding itself but the rest is actually for cooling regardless of whether you have an actual oil rad and even to some extent on water cooled bikes. The engine didn't get hot in 5 seconds.
tl;dr IMHO bike had more than enough oil to idle without any possibility of damage and neither got hot enough or put under enough load for it to be an issue.
*For combustion, the gear box has it's own separate lubrication system. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

I think you conveyed the suffering of anxiety really well in your original post, by not having a full stop until right near the end, it forced me to read it, in my own head, in one single breath, and it was quite stress inducing, and made me anxious even though there's no personal peril involved.
AND.BREATHE.
O.C.D. I doubt it, as you didn't put the periods between the initialism as in this paragraph.
The bike will be fine, probably . Best prepare a solicitor and brief them just in case
It's a few seconds, in an unstressed engine, under no load. Your post is a dichotomy of that.
Don't worry, the sun will be here soon and we can all get out on our bikes to escape ourselves. ____________________

One good thing for the OP is that unlike most bikes Royal Enfields have roller bearing big-ends (most bikes are shell bearing). The big-end is one of the the first things to suffer from catastrophic oil failure but his bike being roller bearing would probably run for a long while on idle and a fair good while under load even if all the oil were drained out.
I would not be going back to that mechanic though. Running the engine whilst draining the oil is stupid and unnecessary. What little is left in the pump is not going to make a difference to the oil change. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

ABR1997, Maybe you should consider trading your Royal Enfield for a Honda Cub. Performance is about the same, and the Cub is indestructable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaeKrqJJqm0 ____________________ History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men - BOC |
