I always have plenty of projects bubbling away. After 10 years finally getting on and replacing some (original rock hard) seals. Will need at least one bearing though. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Helped my brother-in-law change the knackered floating front discs on his old ZZR600.
Had a test ride on it, for a 33 year old it's actually still a really, really good bike - a comfy doddle to pootle about town on, then a complete hooligan out of town ____________________ Honda CB125F, Kawasaki ZX6R J1, 1978 Kawasaki KZ650, 1922 Sheffield-Henderson Blackburne grasstrack/sprint |

Saved £40 by buying a standard metal shielded 6305 instead of a 83357A-9 by carefully transferring the oil slinger/retainer ring part from old bearing. Bit of patience and careful equal retentioning/rebending of the curly parts (not sure of name) in order that the ring is retained in the machined groove properly. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Disassembled the 'new' showa USD forks for the 'prilla. I'm now faced with an alarming array of bits and bobs. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750, SL1000

You mean the inlet? If so: Yes I can see minute cracks on the clamping section. But the screw top was definately letting something in. Skipping threads and not completely etc. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Yes. That is the most crucial part for proper operation. As your intake manifold is metal/not plastic nor rubber, I doubt there are any cracks directly in it, but I do believe the seals/gaskets on both ends might be worn out and that's where the air gets in. There is a simple test for this, with the engine running, spray some carb/brake cleaner (must be flammable) on suspicious spots, if the idle raises, you found your leak. I recommend carb/break cleaner, because I can be 100% sure there will be no residue afterwards + those usually do not eat rubber/plastics, unlike for instance chain cleaners. Motorcycle chains use neoprene o-rings (x-rings), not rubber.
As for the top of the carburetor, with a CV carburetor any air leak there does affect the membrane's functionality, however as your carburetor seems be a regular slide carburetor, I don't think it's that important to have it air tight there. I sure might be wrong, I only worked on USSR era slide carbs.
TL;DR: the most important part is the intake manifold and its air tightness. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Yes of course. There are some tiny cracks I saw- that may or may not change/let air through with warm/cold conditions. Pretty standard really- tehre is no seal just metal on metal. Though seals to barrel is fine. Done all that stuff checking with carb cleaner etc. For now- just slapped loads of grease on the inside of inlet where carb mates- and on the outside where the cracks would follow through to. I've broken a few of these over the years over-tightening. Unfortunately the aftermarket ones are really poorly ported.
Yes- there's an o-ring in the cap to keep it air tight. Without o-ring (or on earlier bvf carbs a sort of paper gasket) idle is indeed all over teh place. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11
