I got a NSR 125 and i need a new spark plug. Can anyone recommend one to me. Something not too expensive and lasts that extra bit longer and does wotever a spark plug does a lil better, Smile

Thanks Raps

PS, do these get really black really quick on the NSR's? Cos mine is supposed to be practically new (200km old) and when I checked it, it was as black as anything. Im thinking maybe the garage didnt check that side of the bike when i bought it!!!

Well seeing as a spark plug is only gonna cost you around 7 quid is the life of it really a problem?

I change my spark plugs everytime i do an oil change which for me seems the best time to to it.

Also what make should I buy? Is there a brand I shoudl look out for. What do you buy for your bike? What bike have u got anyways?

if the plug is relativly new and in good condition (appart from been black) have you considered cleaning it with a wire brush!?

the black is a mixture of carbon and oil! I used to take my spark plug out every other week on my NS125R and clean it up!

What ever you do, don't buy any spark plug with the word 'CHAMPION' on it...

/me digs out classic visual reference:

https://www.tin3d.com/images/sparkplugs.jpg

Is it sooty black, or oily black?...in most cases, you can probably get away with just cleaning the plug rather than buying a new one, and spend your money on getting a qualified mechanic (oxymoron?...or maybe just moron Razz) to see what's wrong with your bike. It could just be a case of using too much choke in the morning...

Try a B9ECS, it might make the bike marginally quicker

Don't clean it with a wire brush coz it can take off the coating.

a hotter plug also causes more engine wear, and oil more at lower revs. not good for town work

By the sound of it your bike is running rich which is no bad thing be worried when its running lean and you take your plug out and its bone white, to be quite honest i'd leave it as it is mate and just replace the plug regularly or you could jet down and correct the mixture giving you longer plug life and the possibility of more power (it will only be a small increase though)

hope this helps Very Happy

Cheers lads,

Tin the plug looked more like "sooty black", my friend just too it out and cleaned it with a wire brush and then put it back in again. The bike started first time (previously it weren't starting at all, just making sounds as though it were gonna start but just cud not).

I was still iffy about riding it though, since i figured i would get a new spark plug and then if it conked out again i wud have something ready and handy to replace the old one.

Problem is i tried 3-4 places for this spark plug (NGK BR9ECS) and they all said its not something they keep in stock and have to order it.

So i sit and wait, driving my car instead, rather be on the bike to be honest.

Anyways Thanks
Raps

Alright mate your not confined to having to use the B9ECS take your old plug to a shop/garage and they will give you the equivilent plug or an alternative

Hope this helps mate Wink

Hi

Doubt an Iridium plug would stay clean for longer, just cost a fortune more to replace (think they are around £12 each the last time I asked)

If you are using the bike round town then maybe use a B8 plug. The number is the heat range the plug works in, with lower number being "hotter" plugs to work in a colder engine (thats logic for you......). A lower number will result in a higher temp in the combustion chamber and will make the plug less likely to foul up. However it is possible that it will cause problems (possibly engine damage such as a hole burnt in the piston) if the bike is thrashed with that plug in place.

Honda specify a BR9ECS plug, or a BR10ES plug for extended high speed riding. From that I would guess that you could use a BR9ES plug without any real problems, and these should be easy to find

If you want to know how the NGK plug names can be decoded:-

All the best

Keith
