Unfortunately, as Ste said, you can't de-restrict a 4 stroke, as they are already de-restricted.

I did my cbt on a yam sr125 and didnt like it much. The easiest way to derestrict is to get a aprilia rs125 and sell the sr125.
you can get a decent rs125 for £1000. dunno what your sr125 is worth but if not that much then start saving up

I did my CBT on one and thought they were pretty much perfect for learning / CBT.

Compared to my cagiva planet though, they are very bland to ride.

Not alot you can do to get more speed out of a 125 4 stroke im afraid. Ive got a Honda XL125s. it will do a steady 60. and it has a leakey Head gasket at the moment!

I wouldnt go getting a 125 2 stroke because they are like trying to fight an uphill battle with no legs!!!

Once the problems start, They dont stop!

A freeflowing airfilter , such as a K&N , straight through exhaust and jet the carb up , set it all up on a Dyno and you will gain an increase in power.

ANY motorcycle can be tuned for more power. just depends on how much money you want to spend on it.

adding a K&N airfilter sounds within my capabilities although the exhaust and jetting carb up is a little over my head I thinks.
Unless it really is quite easy I think I have only 2 options.
Leave it as it is or pay someone to do it.

My mate has just bought a SR125 too, I'll point him to this thread to see what he can do. I have to admit, the SR125 is a nifty bike. I drove one from Darlington to Rochdale last week and it easily got to 65-70 when I was slip streaming lorries. I think the bike is very one fun and excellent to learn on. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

What's a straight through exhaust? When jetting up the carb is it just the main jet that gets changed/altered or a few components?

A simple yet fairly shite change to make is to tighten the throttle stop screw so the bike idles faster. This means the throttle is slightly more open with the twistgrip at rest, but since there's still the same amount of travel on the twistgrip, you get slightly extra all the way. As a result, with it all the way open you get the old top power plus whatever you've added on with the screw. Just remember that once it's warmed up it'll idle much quicker anyway, you won't get half as much engine braking as before and it can make the bike very difficult to control when slowing down. Not really a clever thing to do, probably not advisable but its a very simple procedure which, if you really want it, can get you a little bit faster. Or at least it did when I tried it.

Or there's the 'chopper' route - Remove everything which is not absolutely vital and replace everything else with something lighter to increase the power/weight ratio. Having said that, on a 4t 125 there isn't much power nor much weight to work with.

Adding a K&N alone (cone shapped one, doubt they do a replacement filter for the airbox) will give next to no power (certainly not enough to really be able to feel it), but without playing with the jets at the same time it is likely to cause flat spots (and might cause it to run dangerously lean at high revs).

As lorries are restricted to 56mph, tends to suggest that the speed over reads.

It will have no effect, as that just lifts the slide in the carb a touch (on a slide carb). The amount it lifts the slide is tiny (probably 2mm~3mm from the lowest setting where it would not stand a hope of idling to the highest setting where it would idle somewhere beyond the red line), and would just increase the free play in the cable.

All the best

Keith

I think Ive had a great idea how to get my SR125 to go faster!
I currently weigh just over 15 stone, If i can get down to my youthful weight of about 11 1/2 stone I might get an increase of about 5 mph Laughing what do ya reckon guys......

I think I'm giving up now.. Keith thanks for your input, it makes sense and I had a laugh too.

Heh, well it looks like the answer really is to pass the test and buy a new bike.

Yup. guess I've got to do it and take my test, its just this bloody theory and hazard perception I'm not looking forward to. I have had a full licence for over 18 years so realistically I dont stand a chance without going back to skool as it were!!! Crying or Very sad

Still its booked for end July and Ive ordered every learning aid I can find on Amazon. While they do have them training cd's for bikes they only have hazard perception cd's for car drivers. Also, I was reading in MCN that this has been noticed, so what may I ask is anyone doing about it?

Still its good to see that the new roads minister is a biker, restores my faith somewhat.

What are the differences between the car HP test and the bike one? I can imagine road surfaces being featured, but other than that surely they're pretty similar?

to be honest I'm not sure, like you say road surfaces and there are weather conditions, puddles, smears on the road. But I would have thought there are hazards more specific to bikers than other road users. Accidents happen because drivers did not see riders ect.
I dont think I am experienced enough to know what the differences if any are.
