Hiya,

Following on from https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=562546 that thread, I've been playing with the bike.

I've checked the plugs which are fine, checked the air filter and will clean it before I put it back (although it's not overly dirty).

I feel the next step is to check the fuel filter. So I have my tank off my bike, and a petrol container. I've held the tank above the container, and turned the fuel on, yet no fuel comes out... I've tried this again with the petrol cap off to get an air flow.

Now - a) is this supposed to happen, or could this be part of the problem I'm having with the bike?
b) how do I drain the fuel?

The haynes manual says nothing Sad

Craig

I cheated with my 500S, I started the engine with the fuel line disconnected and put the line into a fuel container.

I left the vacuum hose on of course, so that ay when you start the engine the vacuum is created thus draining the tank.

I am sure there is a proper and safer way though! Laughing

Are you sure it hasnt got a vacuum operated fuel tap or something like that so the engine has to be runnin for it to flow properly (if it has it will have a 'prime' position or button.

Yep, vaccuum fuel tap. Petrol won't run out without a vaccuum being applied to the tap.

What you can do is if the tank isn't all that full is to tip it over onto the right side and remove the fuel tap without any spillages since it is now at the top and sat in air. Then simply pick up the tank and pour the fuel out of the hole into your chosen container. I sat mine on its side in an old tyre I had lying about to do this last time I had to drain the tank to avoid scratching the paint.

You will need to remove the tap to clean the filter anyway.

So simple, yet ingenious!

Ran out of barbeque fuel in France so I spent all week sucking petrol out of the bike tanks. Got pretty good at it in the end every time a fancied a cigarette it took a leap of faith Very Happy
