Really peed off at the mo. Been parking outside work putting the bike up against the wall of the building and chaining it to the street sign as per instructions from a traffic warden. He said if its on the road (parking bays pay and display) i will get a ticket. He said as long as its not causing an obstruction it will be fine against the building. 4 weeks later I have a call from a mate to tell me my bikes being booked so I leg it outside (in time thankfully).
I asked what was the problem and she (traffic warden) said you cant park on the pavement, ok but ... I explained. She said that I'd been misinformed (and that she was a supervisor) and that I could park at the end of the bay as long as a car can still use it. She radio'd head office and they said I could park it inbetween two cars (ie the middle of the bay) (so even the supervisor was wrong) but I know I'll get a ticket eventually as another traffic warden will come along and make up their own rules. So who do I go to to get to clarify the situation. Do any of you lot know the exact rules. I believe I am casuing more obstruction leaving it in the middle of the road and it was out of everyones way on the pavement (still a good 4-5 ft clearance with the bike there) but of course the word of the law had spoken and couldn't go back on what she'd said.

P.s She said I may get a ticket anyway if there isn't a car in the space next to mine (ie drives off before I do) this is a crazy country we live in shame we've let the govenment spoil it

I know you shouldn't park on the pavement. It will be veiwed as an obstruction to pedestrians.

However, what I do not understand is why you cannot park in a car bay? Understandably you are trying to avoid paying the pay and display ticket (there's not really anywhere to display a ticket on a bike). However, I asked in Cardiff and they work on a voucher system for parking - similar to pay and display but more flexible. Motorcycles can park in car bays in this instance and don't have to display a ticket.

It might be an idea to try and park at the end of the bay as suggested, but if you are leaving it there everyday make sure you chain it to something please.

Maybe write a letter to your local council asking for advice as to how to park your motorcycle detailing all the problems you have had.

That's very interesting! Got a link?

I have emailed the local council and await their reply in the mean time I've built a ramp and have moved the bike inside work. Lets see the ba*tards ticket that!!!

The thing that gets me is that theres a huge wheely bin (6ft x3) 8ft away and that takes up more room on the pavement (but still not obstructing) than my bike it just hasn't got a tax disk or numberplate on it so "its ok being there isn't it" pathetic attitude of 1 traffic warden is all it boils down too as the many other wardens thought it was the best place for it.

I could be very wrong, but I am sure I remember seeing something one television about business owners only being allowed to leave their bins/other waste for a limited period of time during a specified rubbish collection.

Someone told me a while ago (don't go doing this, I don't want to be responsible for anyone getting tickets if it doesn't work) that if you cover your tax disc and numberplate with a plastic bag then you cannot get a ticket because to remove the bags would be tampering and parking wardens are not allowed to tamper with any vehicle... but I wouldn't try my luck with that one to be honest.

Odd question maybe but if you have a cover locked to the bike in such a way as it wasn’t possible to lift it to read the number plate how can you get a ticket without then doing criminal damage to you property.

If they do damage your property then the ticket is will not stand as it was given only due to an illegal act.

Also if I remember correctly if any ticket isn’t placed in the right place on your vehicle i.e. windscreen for cars (not sure where for bike) it is again unenforceable and a cover would stop such a placement.

But then I may just be a dribbling loon I never can tell riding about London in this weather.

my car was parked 2 wheels on the pavement and managed to get outside before she gave me a ticket. Told me that their needs to be "2 pram widths" space left on the pavement for it to be legal. That might be where the confusion is (how much space to leave)

Got an email back from the council:-

I believe I have answered you points below:

*
You may park in a Pay and Display bay providing you purchase a valid Pay and Display ticket and it is displayed (I would keep the bottom tear off copy just in case the ticket on display went missing).
*
You are not allowed to park on any footpath.
*
You may park in a Car park providing you have purchased a Valid Pay and Display Ticket.
*
All motorcycle bays are free of charge within the Controlled Parking Zone.

the traffic wardens can also ask passers by to remove coverings of number plates.

however you can also try removing your number plate and tax disc though apparently in London they'll lift your bike and crush it

The major problem with regards to parking bikes, particularly in London is that different Boroughs have different rules. For example in Hounslow you can only park in designated bays in a CPZ but in Hammersmith & Fulham & Barnet anywhere. Camden, Islington and Westminster are punitive in their approach and with so many scooters in London the bays are usually full by 10am. Westminster insist they have increased the number of bays by 40% over the past 3 years but as the number of bikes has increased three fold there are not enough. I wrote to TfL (Transport for London)about three years ago pointing this out and they blamed Westminster. Westminster didn't reply to any emails I sent.

The ideal scenarionwould be for the same rule across the UK to cut out in the confusion. In the meantime one has to fill one's brain with the bike parking regulations of each London Borough, when there are more important things to think about! Twisted Evil
