Hiya Guys,

I've had my bike advertised on ebay now for a few days and some guy has made me a very reasonable offer. However he would like me to meet him half way between my town and his.

In all fairness this seems a reasonable request, since it would be a drag doing 40 mile on a 125, however I find myself not being too keen on traveling twenty mile only for the guy to pull out of the deal or try and haggle me down since I've travelled the full distance (you know, reasoning I'll take a lower amount once its wafted under my nose).

Laughing Then there is the business of collect a fat wad of money in the middle of nowhere....I don't even need to go on about how many ways that could go wrong!

Anyway, I'm sure the guy is gen and I'll speak to him over the phone but I was hoping some of you's would have experienced this before and could give me advice on how to proceed!

Cheers
Craig Thumbs Up

40 miles in nothing on a 125. Used to ride mine to Nottingham 120 miles from mine. Sounds a bit soft to me.

Still it's a common thing meeting halfway. Send him loads of pictures. Explain any faults and tell him you won't except any less than the agreed amount.

Taking the money won't be a problem as surely you'll have someone else there to bring you back?

i do 25miles on my RS every time i go to college or work and dont find it excessive (not short either) i think for buying a new anything under 100miles is pritty close but then again i dont mind traveling far if its exactly waht i want (i can be picky) i think he might try and haggle and also a much better idea to do it at you house, saves a lot of troubles i think

Get a mate to follow in his car, offer a night out/few pints/bit of reefa or what not to generally not take the arsehole but not put you out of pocket that much, especially if the guy doesnt show.

That way you cant be harassed into taking the shiney money as your mate helps keep you objective (same principle when buying bikes... mates go 'look at that rust on the swinger/pipes etc' while you're still drooling over the end can and plastics)

Oh and that way you have a) somewhere safe to keep the documents b) something hard to sign the documents on c) somewhere to keep the money in and d) a lift home

And yeh, 20 miles really is fuck all. My favourite blast route is a tad over 35 miles and i do it in about 30 an hour i suppose (no heckling, im just guessing... if it works out as 200mph average... well i am on a honda Laughing)

And before you say im on a 600, i used to do the same route for shits and giggles on my derbi gpr 50 even when it was restricted (45 downhill... 15 uphill... get in)

Hi

Well, you will need someone to come along to give you a lift home. Just make sure you meet somewhere well lit and busy.

20 miles is nothing (my commute is 27 miles, and I regularly used to do 150 mile journies when my old MBX125 was my only form of transport).

All the best

Keith

Craig - just have some big lads with baseball bats in the car, Wink Go with kickstarts idea about a well lit place, e.g maybe a supermarket or McDonalds during open hours.

Craig,

Does the guy just want to look at it, or is he coming to collect it?

If he's just coming to look, then I wouldn't bother meeting half way, 40 miles is nothing, its upto him to come to you.

If he coming to collect it, then I suppose I'd meet half way, but only if a price has been agreed before hand.

Right, I get the impression that the guy wants to collect, so bearing that in mind I would easily meet him half way. lol, I have no qualms taking the bike 20 mile (I've done 100 mile trips on it and do 60 every day on it, round trip to work and back most days).

I was more thinking it would be a drag for the guy, who for all I know has zero bike experience other than a CBT. Laughing Maybe I'm just being to nice Laughing

If at all possible I'm gonna meet outside a bank, so I can cash the money immediately, thus avoiding counterfeits and prevent myself from wandering about with a shed load of money!

I'm also gonna take more hi res shots of the bike and paper work to email the guy first so he can be certan this is the bike he wants. Laughing Laughing If he fucks me about I might just drive the f*cking bike up his f*cking c3ke hole Wink

Cheers for the advice guys Thumbs Up

It not your problem how he gets it home, let him worry about that.

If he starts messing you about, jump on your bike and ride off. Thumbs Up

Make it clear to him beforehand that you won't accept any offers below the asking price (unless of course you will) and ask if he still wants to have a look at it. As others have said, try and go with someone else and make sure he doesn't want to meet in a dark wood at midnight or anything like that. Very Happy

Whilst its not your problem how he gets it home, it would be nice to show some consideration to that factor.

When my GN125 was collected, the new owner had no road experience aside from his CBT. Had he not been with a friend who was to follow him home (30 odd miles), I would have followed to keep the cars off his back and to make sure he got home safe. This would have cost me 60 miles worth of petrol, but I would be happy he got home safe.

Craig

Whilst im not one for following them home, i like to have good followup with them. Id rather not scrape for that last 50 and make them feel they got a bargain, and then advise them of any trouble.

Id like to believe in karma, but sadly it just dont happen

When I bought my GPZ500 on ebay, I hadn't passed my test yet. The seller taxed it and rode it 40 miles to my house, for the price of a train ticket home and a lift to the station.

Buying blind, it helped to know he was happy to ride it - and he did give me the option of rejecting it.

Shame I knew bugger all about bikes and didn't notice it had no water in the cooling system!

(I honestly believe the rad blew on that run, it runs sweet as a nut, no other leaks, oil OK - I was just lucky, it's turned out to be a good starter bike).

Usual story with ebay - everybody I've dealt with has been great, check his feedback, if he's got none be very suspicious.

I have done it on trust before.

Sold my SR 125 to a guy without taking a deposit on it. completly genuine.

Sold My ER-5 and took a £150 deposit to pay for delivary costs for it

Didnt even count the money as I had 100% trust in the buyer untill I was miles away on the M25.

With the bandit I paid a deposit fairly quickly and arranged to pick it up thus letting the seller know I was not pissing around.

But if you want me to come down with you or something PM me as I only live 30 miles down the road.
