 |
|
Went on a nice ride over the border to Cornwall the other day, specifically the village of Kingsand. Lovely little village, by the sea, but as is common in several Devon/Cornwall villages the roads can be very narrow so parking can sometimes be tricky.
Neways arrived in Kingsand, approached the Car Park ticket barrier...And then an elderly lady appeared and told me I couldn't go in. I was confused as I could see plenty of room so I asked why. She was alright, not rude or anything but pointed to the sign. "NO MOTORCYCLES ALLOWED" I was amazed. I asked why and she replied the owner just didn't want them.
The village was packed. This was the only Car Park, I couldn't see anywhere I could leave the bike safely so left. No Cornetto for me
I just got to thinking about the legalitys of this and wondered even though it is privately owned, is the owner breaking any kind of law by doing this?
Similar things in your area?

Car parks tend to be on private land. Even if run by the council or a contractor they are 'owned' by the council. So the owner can set the rules.
FWIW, this is also true of pub car parks. Think this sort of attitude dates back to the leather jacket clad bad boy biker image in the 60s. I don't think some people in these businesses realise how much modern bikes and all the gear costs and therefore how much potential disposable income bikers have and so should be seen as potential customers.
I think there was a bit of a fuss a bit back when one of the east coast resorts banned bikes from a car park in the town (Scarborough springs to mind but I may be wrong on that one). There was also some fuss in Stratford when the council banned bike parking. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I've never seen that ever!
I would have asked the old lady where she suggested I park (since she probably knows the area). Of course, i'd also be tempted to park my bike across the entrance to the car park, lock it up, and wander off for a couple of hours.
You shouldn't be allowed to ban bikes if there isn't anywhere else to park though, thats really bad.

Can't say I heard of that one before. Probably as said above most people don't normally bother putting tickets on bikes (meself included ) as people pinch them. Therefore I guess he does'nt want bikes in there as they would fill up a space which a 'paying' car would and therefore lose money. Seems silly as theres normally gaps to squeeze bikes in. |

So, in theory, I could own a car park and have "No ethnic people" sign??
It's just silly. ____________________ Current bikes: 1960 Triumph 5ta x2, TTR600RE, KTM200EXC, Cagiva Elephant 900ie. |
