Went on a nice ride over the border to Cornwall the other day, specifically the village of Kingsand. Lovely little village, by the sea, but as is common in several Devon/Cornwall villages the roads can be very narrow so parking can sometimes be tricky.
Neways arrived in Kingsand, approached the Car Park ticket barrier...And then an elderly lady appeared and told me I couldn't go in. I was confused as I could see plenty of room so I asked why. She was alright, not rude or anything but pointed to the sign. "NO MOTORCYCLES ALLOWED" I was amazed. I asked why and she replied the owner just didn't want them.
The village was packed. This was the only Car Park, I couldn't see anywhere I could leave the bike safely so left. No Cornetto for me Sad Mr. Green
I just got to thinking about the legalitys of this and wondered even though it is privately owned, is the owner breaking any kind of law by doing this?
Similar things in your area?

Car parks tend to be on private land. Even if run by the council or a contractor they are 'owned' by the council. So the owner can set the rules.

FWIW, this is also true of pub car parks. Think this sort of attitude dates back to the leather jacket clad bad boy biker image in the 60s. I don't think some people in these businesses realise how much modern bikes and all the gear costs and therefore how much potential disposable income bikers have and so should be seen as potential customers.

I think there was a bit of a fuss a bit back when one of the east coast resorts banned bikes from a car park in the town (Scarborough springs to mind but I may be wrong on that one). There was also some fuss in Stratford when the council banned bike parking.

I've never seen that ever!

I would have asked the old lady where she suggested I park (since she probably knows the area). Of course, i'd also be tempted to park my bike across the entrance to the car park, lock it up, and wander off for a couple of hours.

You shouldn't be allowed to ban bikes if there isn't anywhere else to park though, thats really bad.

It's a pretty unusual place Kingsand in that even the locals park there, and then walk home! Parking is that tight. There's another village called Cawsand next door, wonder if they have the same attitude? It effectively bans motorcycles from the area.

I've never come across it myself and can't really see the problem. If i owned a car park i'd rather squeeze 1000 bikes than 500 cars into it as long as they have to pay the same.

All of the car parks i've used have always had free bike parking with something solid to chain it to.

Ive never known a car park to ban bikes, saying that ive never seen a car park which charges for motorbikes.
When out on my bike i dont really tend to leave it anywhere. With my rs125 it was parked next to the main entrance of school so it was safe there.
If i need somethign from town it gets left for 5-10mins max before i return to it and the places i normally park are in full view of where i need to go.

Can't say I heard of that one before. Probably as said above most people don't normally bother putting tickets on bikes (meself included Razz ) as people pinch them. Therefore I guess he does'nt want bikes in there as they would fill up a space which a 'paying' car would and therefore lose money. Seems silly as theres normally gaps to squeeze bikes in.

The NCP car park down in Brighton is pretty good, don't have to pay, although I've never checked the official line as I usually ride out of the pedestrian entrance/exit.

So, in theory, I could own a car park and have "No ethnic people" sign??

It's just silly. Thumbs Down

as I've had a bicycle for years, i tend to park my rs on the pavement outside the place i'm going into

when i was in shrewsbury the other week, i parked in a car park that had a designated free section for motorbikes but cars had to pay. this is the way it shd be Smile

The problem with bikes in car parks is that any tickets placed on bikes can be nicked, so either you'd get a fine for parking without displaying a ticket or you wouldn't bother getting a ticket in the first place, and if you were fined, you'd say somebody must have nicked your ticket. Either way, you'd appeal, causing the car park operator hassle.

Been there, tried that, ended up with a £60 fine as I couldn't be bothered going to court over it Sad

I think that was Hunstanton IIRC, they soon saw the error of their ways when the town lost money though.
