'The#Doctor#' - Maybe a gang with an order for a load of fast bikes, 'Gone in 60 seconds style'? Good to hear that the police will stop you if you look dodgy though...

Not holding my breath but without going into details, this guy could really do with some good luck for once...
Will be watching eBay etc. for sure but reckin they've prob got buyers already lined-up. Evil or Very Mad

Why don't people just buy new bikes and break them up? Surely this would be quite a profitable idea?

Mad Awful, awful .... Those thugs are real picky about their stash, huh. I'll bet on the professional thievery scum -- stealing good, almost-new bikes, breaking their parts up and selling them online or even locally. It might be that the scumbags who did it are keeping tabs on your friend for days before they finally hit on it. Let's hope that the police are already on their trail...Witnesses might be useful, too.

I symphatize with your friend. Keep your hopes up, pal!

Why pay if you can get it for free? Confused

No! Surprised

What Vespa meant is when you buy a bike 'no questions asked', you could probably get that bike for £1000, as it's illegal to own it, and it would take a lot of work and professional criminals doing it.

However, when sold as parts you're much less likely to be caught, and people feel the same (i they even know) so you could probably get double what you would as a whole bike.

Besides the fact that they didn't pay for it anyway, so it's all profit.

That is a bloody shame, it's a gorgeous bike.

Will his insurance sort him out?

I dint get my bike nicked this week, but sum fag stole petrol cap, grips and bar ends, cost me 22 quid to replace. Really not helpful when trying to pay off lots of money for my new bike.

One of the reasons i laugh at people who fit quick action fairing bolts onto road bikes. Ewan mcgregor lost most of a ducati 749 he left parked outside a mates house last year.

Interesting.

I was our for a sunday afternoon ride a couple of months ago and became aware of a red mgf convertible behind me. Wasn't tailgating or annoying me in any way but I wasn't aiming for anywhere in particular and my route (Loughton, Waltham Cross, Enfield, Chingford) didn't make sense for him if he was trying to get from point A to B.

I just saw the novelty value initially, thinking he's also out for a spin on a sunday afternoon and maybe interested in getting a bike; I used to sometimes follow bikes in the car when I was doing my training just hoping to pick up tips and look at their lines through corners etc.

Then I got thinking there might be another motive here and there's no way I'm gonna let him follow me to my front door. So anyway, we get onto the North Circ and I open up and shake him off but I'm looking in the mirrors and he's undertaking and diving in between lanes, trying his damndest to keep me in sight. Strange..... Why would he bother to that extent?

I'm now more conscious of anything that follows me over a distance and if a strange car follows me into my cul de sac then I'll go around, come out again and do a quick circuit just to make sure. Not that I'm paranoid; it's just that I think everyone's potentially out to nick my bike.

I had something similar today, a 7series BMW followed me for i guess about 15miles....

He started following me on the A2 from Greenwich, i turned off the at the Danson interchange and so did he, i was on my way to change a tire for a friend in sidcup so i carried on as normal thinking its just coincidence, now i know the area so i was using back roads as a short cut and he was still following me.

I eventually get to where im going after taking a few quick turns that he still took, i pull in and stop get off my bike and walk towards him then he drives off staring at me.

Now was this somebody following me to scope out my bike or was it an undercover copper?

Jeez, I live down the road from North Finchley too!! I'll look out for it but it sure is worrying. My son came home last Saturday at 4am and saw two people sniffing around our driveway where I park my bike. They ran off when they saw him. (He's a big lad). I thought they were after my daughter's pushbike - maybe it was my bike. It's a bit worrying. Also last night a neighbour's bike alarm was wailing like a banshee at 2.15am - thought it was the wind but maybe it was people having a look.

Right - off to lock it up, alarm it, cover it, chain it & get down the shotgun!! Wink

surprised they had an MGF, more of a hairdressers car rather than a bike theif...but then I guess its smoke and mirrors!

No one would have followed me this morning after the curry and beer I has last night Laughing

What I meant is that apparently you can sell a bike for, say, £3k as a whole bike, but if you strip it and sell it as parts, you can get more than that. So, the sum of parts outvalues the sum of the whole. Go figure.

The BikeSafe people used one guy's bike (can't remember which one it was as were were about a dozen) as an example: as a bike, it could be sold for £9k, but as parts £15k+. Partly it's because of the need for bike parts from perfectly legal customers, and partly because stolen bike parts are easier to shift than complete bikes, so there's a larger market for the parts, esp now with Ebay, pushing up the prices of the parts, whereas stolen bikes are going to be have to be marketed to a small target market willing to take the risk of being found in possession of stolen property. With parts, a lot of people would buy them even if they knew them to be stolen, but of course, for most of the parts, there's no way of knowing, with no serial numbers on them.

doesn't datataging the parts prevent this activity ?

Nope! Even if they know beforehand that its datatagged, there'll still be plenty of bits they can sell. Although I guess it greatly improves chances of parts being traced back to the owner.

My CBR600/900 was nicked last year. They followed me home and reversed their van into my garage to buckle the door and removed the bike, tools, etc... Bless! I got the bike back after they blew up the engine and dumped it. Evil or Very Mad
Hanging is too good for em! Twisted Evil

Thanks again for sympathies and peeps keeping an eye out. Muchly appreciated! Smile
