ok none of my mates at college have bikes and i am the only one (not sure why sometimes) but anyways, i took one of them on the back of my RS just round a car park one day as he was asking me to go on the back but didnt really want to go on road with L-plates etc etc. Today he comes into college and explains that he has got enough money to get a 125cc bike and i though cool! so naturally i say ill help him get into biking.

however later on he come up with a printout of a CBR125 from honda website and says that its the biek he wants. IMO CBR125 is a good starter bike so i was thinking yea ok doesnt sound too bad, it was at the point he was quting "simular styling to larger sibling CBR600 and fireblade" that i got a little worried. i told him nicly how they are somewhat small and dont really go that fast, also said that a lot of poeple think there not that great as bike but his mind seems to quite made up already,

i showed him NSR125 in a hope he might change his mind and he went on about how the website said they had crap fuel ecomony!

i also explained how buying it new was not a good idea either as CBR125 lose value like anything

The point is should i let him buy one or try and get him to get somthing he wont be bored of in a couple of months?

The NSR will do 160 miles to a tank if run gently, or 110 if ragged.
You want bad fuel economy, tell him to get an RS250.
80 miles to a tank - yeuch.

PS. Don't let him get a CBR125 unless he's the size of a 12 year old - he'll be too big for it.

try and convince him, usher him onto BCF so he can see that the view is not just yours alone. If he still goes for his own choice, leave him be. But be ready with your "i told you so's" in a few months time Laughing

Perhaps bet him a pint or summit, free beer somewhere along the line! Thumbs Up

yea but if he get a NSR i can get him to come on rideout with other 125cc instead of being left behind as CBR are really slow (never rode with one but from figures no way it could keep up with other 125's eg RS NSR) any good reasons anyone can think of why not?

Go on eBay and show him the selling prices of nearly new CBR125s. At the very least it should convince him to get a used cheaper, so when he does get bored of it he won't be put off by losing a packet on it.

Tell him to get a cbr125, honestly, best ides. That way he'll get bored of it quick and go pass his test, unlike you boys who sit on your 2 strokes for 23 months before deciding you should take your test. RazzRazzRazz

Go get him to sit on one at a local dealers and then see how he feels.

Do you mean the lads that learn to ride their bikes close to their limits rather than bimbling around on them for a few months and then getting another bike they don't know how to ride to its full potential? Rolling Eyes

Why a 400?

Might as well go for a 600, or an 850 in my case. Very Happy

No, I generally mean the ones that stick around annoyingly for 23 months posting stupid questions about how to make their machines quicker and how it will beat imprezas off the lights. Granted there is less of them on the forum it seems.

I generally tend to think people magically 'grow up' when they get a bigger bike. Well, at least stop talking pish.

Back under your rock.

i want a 400 becuase ill have just the right amount for a nice 400 and the insurance and will be more than enough power, i ride my RS125 fast so a 400 with double BHP will be more than enough for a year or two at least i think

He wont be left far behind. Figures don't tell you everything. I go on rideouts with lots of folks on 750/liter bikes on my 500 and can usually keep them in sight (unless they fly off up the motyorway at warp 10). Normal roads, it makes little difference. I took a CB125TDC on a 300 mile run (including motorways), everyone else was on 650+ bikes. I arrived 20 minutes behind them.

My only fault with the CBR125 is that they are too expensive and break too easily when you drop them which makes them unsuited as a learner bike.

Nout wrong with a cbr 125, cheaper than buying a brand new RS. May not be as good as NSR's etc. But its his descion. My cbr's been good to me,bought £1800 brand new with free Sidi boots chucked in. I only paid a grand for it, the rest was insurance money. But im booking my test soon an d then its onto a bigger bike.

I also dont think there is anything wrong with the cbr, i used to own one and it was brilliant to learn on, not hard on the wrists like the rs so gives you more time to concentrate on what your doing rather than thinking god this hurts! Let him buy what he wants, a 125 is never quick, even the rs's and nsr's. If your worried about how he will keep up with you then slow down! I used to go riding with my husband and friends on their 600's + and they just went slower for me. When you get to smaller roads you'll be doing the same speeds anyway, and you wont be doing motorway riding because your on L plates.
Dont try to push him beyond his limits because thats when accidents happen. Support him in his decisions.
And i never lost that much value on mine when i sold it!

I think the CBR is ok too. I rode mine for a year and loved it.

Buying secondhand is a good move as someone else will suffer the inital depreciation (me... Laughing ).

I've stuck an advert in the for sale section for my old CBR125. My friend bought it but now needs to sell it to purchase a van for his business and I reckon you could get it for a good price. I can guarantee its been well looked after!

Exacly! nothing wrong with CBR. And for a excellent and similar looking condition you pay for cbr's your still looking at £1500 for a low milage rs,mito. But i got mine brand new for 300 extra quid. So if he haggles and blags a desperate Honda dealer he can get a good cheaper deal on a brand new CBR, but there is also plenty of bargains on ebay. And spending 1800 quid is justified if he want to keep the bike for a long time and isnt too fussed about doing his test.
