ok i have a zxr400, and wanted to do my first oil change becouse i got some super oil to put in. but got the fairing off unpluged the drain bolt, and i got less than a pint of oil out. the oil tank seemed to stay the same leve. so i but bolt back in start bike up , shut bike down take bolt out and i get the same amount again. is there somthing els i should take out, like the oil filter or somthing.

ps i was on a paddock stand when i was doing all this.

take the oil filter out and change it.

Its a waste of time to just change the oil without doing the filter, because the clean oil will get dirty from all of the crap thats in the filter.

Oh, and you *Really* shouldn't run the engine after draining some of the oil...

Try changing the filter and doing it all on the sidestand. Karma

Halfords sell filter grips that are pretty good and cheap. Failing that (if griping it my hand does not work) hammer a screw driver through the filter and use it as leverage (note: if this goes wrong you're in trouble).

Thumbs Up

Quite possibly because you had it on the paddock stand. I'd put it down on flat ground, on its sidestand and see if any more comes out.

Or you've undone completely the wrong bolt. Smile

Did you warm the bike up before you started taking the oil out in the first place?

Some oils are really thick before they get warmed up, so if its cold, and the weather has taken a downward turn in temperature, which doesn't help. The oil might be thick and gloopy and won't come out of the drain hole very easily.

However, you've now already taken some of the oil out, so starting it now isn't a good idea. You could put somecheap stuff in it to top it up, then warm it through I suppose.*

How much oil does it hold? There will still be some oil in the filter.

ive done it with cars and you get tons come out when you ahve ran the engine before for a while, however be carefull when you take the filter off as first time i did it i got really hot oil poured all over my hands, was not a nice feeling! never done it on bike but warming it up should help aswell.

Have you got the filler cap off while you drain it? Air locks and all that.

Is it the level hole? The one you leave open when you fill it up and when it reaches that level you stop?

I seemto remember that my old MT5 had one of those. Not that my mechanical expertise means I'm right though. Whistle

Woa big boy... Hand
Before you punch a hole in your filter.
MAKE SURE the new one is correct.....
Or you will not have much of a bike until you get the correct one. Sad

Is you are going for 'super' oil then may as well lash out and buy a OEM filter from the dealer. Smile

FILTER REMOVAL TOOL Idea
Your maw's dish towel tied in a reef knot then wound round a bar. (Jack handle 1/2 drive long socket set extension) makes a spiffing filter strap. Takes a bit of technique to work it but your a bright boy. Laughing

I had to do the old smash a screwdriver through the filter trick when I changed mine. Where the filter is it's too tight to get a socket in there, I even tried a strap but it was on so tight it didn't budge and I couldn't even get any leverage on it anyway.

no hydraulic clutch and gearbox oil must have just been normal oil but a small hole or sommet must have stoped it commin out.

fucking hell this thread is starting to baffle me

weve gone from answering his question on how to drop the oil to "is it the clutch fluid youv drained?"

fuck me

run the bike
find the sump
undo the biggest bolt which should be parallel to the floor
remove it and replace or clean the washer
once thats drained
remove the filter and empty it

whats hard about that?

Nothing, except...

He didn't run the bike up first
He didn't undo the biggest bolt
The oil didn't run out when he did undo whatever bolt he did
